Personality psychology is a theory that focuses on the distinctive way of thinking, behaving, and functioning that makes an individual unique and different. Personality is crucial because it gives an individual’s identity and how they can be perceived from a societal angle. People in society can adopt different types of personalities depending on their cultures and alignments in life. More often than not, personality traits are determined by environmental variables and genetic traits passed on from parents. In the case of environmental factors, personalities are dependent on the environment one was brought up in or exposed to at a young age. Children are quick to observe and emulate actions or sounds in their surroundings. For this reason, they require quality caregivers who will be emotionally available and consistent to support, commend and correct them as they grow. They are likely to develop mistrust and mental health issues as adults if they are exposed to harsh and aggressive behavioral settings because their subconscious mind actively records these traumatic experiences. Theories and debates like nature vs. nurture have emerged to explain how personality traits are produced genetically and shaped by environmental factors like culture, parents, and peers over their lifetime to determine the best outcomes for an individual.

Despite its extensive nature, personality psychology is fascinating to study. It opens the minds and allows individuals to look at things and people from different angles. Going through this concept allowed me to evaluate my personality as an individual and student. I used Brigg’s personality indicator to determine where I fall among the sixteen existing personalities. I discovered that personality could help individuals align with their likes, dislikes, abilities, and social groups. It is essential to acknowledge and appreciate different personalities instead of passing judgments and ridiculing people. I intend to do more research on personality psychology and other theories to expand my knowledge base in the future.

Researching and writing about personality psychology has been an interesting and informative journey for me. The research has broadened my knowledge base as far as personalities and their characteristics are concerned. I have also learned that personalities give one their identity, and each is unique to an individual. This research project has also enlightened me on some personality disorders and various clinical ways to treat and control them.

Researching is time-consuming and exhausting because it demands a lot of commitment, sacrifice, and determination. Researching this project allowed me to develop good time management skills and be disciplined all through. Time management allowed me to conduct extensive research on the stipulated days and complete it before the deadline. I also learned how to be patient, especially when looking for credible and relevant sources to facilitate my project. This character trait enabled me to land on sources that contributed to my project in the most significant and relevant way. Moving forward, I intend to use the skills I have learned while researching and composing this project in other school projects and other aspects of my life as well. Documenting the project was a bit tough for me at the beginning because I struggled to achieve a systemic flow of my content. With the help of my colleagues and instructor, especially in the information flow, grammar, and spelling sectors, I became better at it over time. Additionally, constructing a few rough drafts and going through my work repeatedly gave me a clear perspective on carrying on with the project and presenting it through PowerPoint.
