Title Developing Math Skills in Early Childhood

Author(s) Barbara Harris and Dana Petersen

Title of Magazine or Journal Mathematical Policy Research-MPR.COM

Briefly state the main idea of this article.

The main idea of the article is that early math plays a significant role in early literacy among children. Barbara et al (2017) posit that children learn as they grown and parents are most significant force that shapes their brain development. This text notes that as children grow they begin noticing differences in quantity and comparing sizes and shapes of objects. Additionally, they use the early mathematics concepts they gather in playing and other aspects of their day-to-day life.

List three important facts that the author uses to support the main idea.

The authors use the example of how young children use games such as building towers to explore with early math. As they build the tower, they sort the blocks according to color and size and they start noticing spatial relationships which they use to use to develop reasoning skills.

The author mentions a statistic to support the main idea. They note that when asked 93% of parents said admitted to showing or reading a book to their child at least three times a week.

The author mentions that one of the ways to encourage children to think mathematically is by asking them to help in setting the dinner table. One can ask them to count the number of spoons that will be required.

What information or ideas discussed in this article are also discussed in your textbook or other readings that you have done?

The information that is discussed in this article that is similar to the information I have come across in other reading is that early maths provides an ideal context to discuss the meaning of other words. This contributes to early literacy because children learn by firsts thinking about the meaning of words before deciding which words describe what situation.

List at least three (3) new terms or concepts that were discussed in the article, and write a short definition of each.

Medicaid is the United States’ public health insurance program for low-income individuals.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program is a partnership between state and federal governments providing low cost health coverage to children whose families earn more than is required to qualify them for Medicaid

Linguistic development-refers to the higher level cognitive skills that entail oral abilities of people to verbally communicate their needs and wants.

Summarize your personal reaction to this article.

After reading this article, I have gathered new insight on how important early math is for children. Before reading this text, I had no idea how early maths impact cognitive and linguistic development among children. Furthermore, I have learnt that the interactions between children and parents are important as it influences, a child’s understanding of mathematics.
