The emergency

The emergency:

I had just come from school and was in my room writing an essay I was submitting the following day when I had my brother screaming from down the kitchen. My brother had brought a friend over (Kyle) and they were playing some ball at the backyard, I heard some screams but I assumed it was the hype of the game until I heard my brother call out my name that Kyle had slipped and he was bleeding.

Step One: noticing

My brother called out for me to go and help his friend who I found lying down screaming that he was hurt and he was bleeding.

Step Two: interpret

At first, I was shocked and did not know what I was supposed to do, I thought that his hand had a fractured since when I touched it Kyle screamed, also, I was not sure where the blood was coming from.

Step Three: responsibility

I carried Kyle to the porch and placed him on the flow, I asked my brother to get a pillow, basin and some cold water and my mother’s scarf. I asked my brother to soak the towel in the water and place it on Kyle’s forehead while I placed the pillow to alleviate Kyle’s legs. After I folded my mother’s scarf and made a sling that I tied Kyles hard with.

Step Four: decide if you have the skills

Luckily, I had been taught basic first aid when I attended a summer camp where we were taught how to make a sling at home and in case of nose bleed which was common from the hot weather. Sometime back I had watched my mother perform the nose bleed to my brother.

Step Five: Final decision

I called my mother who said she will call Kyle’s mother and she informed me she was one block to reach home and that she will take Kyle to the hospital and her mother can meet them there. I sat Kyle upright and instructed my brother that there would be no more football.

Additional comments

Fortunately, Kyle was discharged the same day since he had only dislocated his hard but he was given some antibiotics for the pain and a better sling. It was my first emergency with no adults around and I am glad for how I managed even with my brother’s pressure. My brother was not so lucky since that was the last time he played football without wearing appropriate clothing at home.

That was the first time I was glad I had attended the camp.
