After a longer delay of the Far Eastern oil pipeline

Summary 1

After a longer delay of the Far Eastern oil pipeline there has been no solution reached to be able to solve the rivalry among the top oil reach nations (Japan, China, and Russia). As a result delay of the pipeline project there are several assessments that can be evaluated from the rivalry. There has been emergent of competition that has been brought via geographical conflicts. The Chinese-Russian relationship is based only on individual country interest and not the interest of the entire Far Eastern region. Despite the fact that competition from for Rivalry has several downfalls to there are other positive and encouraging trends. For example superiority in oil dominancy is a requirement for political security and stability.

It has also been identified in the text that the converging energy interest of these three nations can lead to integration of cross border oil negations for region based corporation.

Summary 2

The article denotes that resources and other environmental components are very important aspects that a nation or a country needs in order to main its sovereignty of these nations. Struggle over the nation’s resources has been a source of tensions and civil wars like that between Chile and Peru. Environmental collapse has been known to be the cause of famine, rebellion and migration. Some of the world resources such as farming land, water resources such as fish, fossil fuel and minerals are the cause of armed struggles.

Although, it has been indentified that competition of resources were the root of modernity and warfare frameworks, the past has had its feelings but the present and the future is yet to face the worst as this struggles of resources as well as exploitation of the same is alarming.

After critical view of the current American situation, three major problems facing the United States of America

After critical view of the current American situation, three major problems facing the United States of America

Introduction

After critical view of the current American situation, I would say we have three major problems facing the United States of America. Key among these problems includes problems related to the economy, crime policy and poverty. This paper therefore explores these problems highlighting their effects and possible intervention.

Discussion

One of the three major problems facing the United States of America today according to Arrighi and Maume (2007) has to do with the issue of poverty among its men, women and children. While exploring the issue of poverty, it is only right that we emphasize on the ways in which the health status and health care availability interact with the low wages, irregularity, and insecurity of gendered work. Poverty presents some difficulties faced by the ordinary people since, for example, the health of a family member and the caregiver’s work are intertwined with a host of other issues and problems including those related to the children schooling, the family’s housing and their access to transportation. While this presentation focuses on the intersection of work and health, we also explore the ways in which both interact with these other problem areas. With the multiple responsibilities facing the ordinary people and their children alike, they are forced to sacrifice important elements of healthcare as well as educational and work opportunities.

One of the major task and responsibility of a modern government is the maintenance of law and order. A government defines and explains the boundaries of crime, law and justice for domestic peace and tranquillity. Since the beginning of human civilisation, instrumentalities of government and policy-making for crime and justice have existed. As regards the crime policy, crimes related to abduction, rape, drugs and murder have been a problem of crime and justice in America for a long time and have become a widespread fear in the American minds. According to Shahidullah (2008) in the last three decades, America’s criminal justice system has seen unprecedented growth and expansion, but the growth in crime has been one of the most important. As regards all forms of crimes, particularly violent crimes have been consistently on the increase. Crime has been rated as one of the most important problems facing local communities. Related studies conducted as regards the topic of crime, found that the American people would rather have their government address the issue of crime as an important issue than economy.

With regard to economic problems, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (2007), the taxes currently are too high for the American people and need to be brought down, as ample and increasing evidence of their environmental effectiveness is now available. However, there remains a high potential for a wider use of these environmental policy instruments provided that they are well designed and that their potential impact on international competitiveness and income distribution are properly addressed. In particular, the environmental effectiveness and economic efficiency of the environmentally related taxes could be improved further if existing exemptions and other special provisions are scaled back and if the tax rates were better aligned with the magnitude of the negative environmental impacts to be addressed.

Conclusion

We can bring to a close that the current difficult yet problematic issues facing the United States of America may be attributed to the major preoccupation of politics and governance since the beginning of civilization because it is a domain of governance that is vital for social order and stability.

European Ecological Imperialism by Crosby

European Ecological Imperialism by Crosby

In the book Ecological Imperialism, Alfred Crosby hints out that majority of the Neo-Europeans population is mainly composed of people of European origin. The issue of increased population of such people of European descent on foreign lands baffles Alfred. This makes him try to understand how it could be possible for those people to get access to such areas and outdo the natives in demographic numbers. The fact of increased concentrations of the people of European origin in such countries including America is a matter of debate and borrows a lot from the historical background of colonialism. It s of crucial importance to note that for a nation to colonize the other nation, the colonizer must have powers that supersede that of the colony. This power may come in different forms. One of the ways in which power supremacy comes in through intellectual property. This can be highly harnessed to offer competitive advantage over other nations in many forms as was depicted by Crosby in his book. The other way in which power supremacy can be used id through military intervention. Several colonialists had superior weaponry that could not be matched with that of the colonies. As such, they had ease of access to several locations and establish their roots there without being overthrown by their colonies.

The Europeans majorly used the intellectual prowess to conquer their colonies as is succinctly depicted in the book. The other issue of concern that the book revolves around is the means through which the Europeans dominated the agricultural sector in the lands of their colonies. They were able to produce many food surpluses that also did well in the international markets making them feature as amongst the world’s top exporters of agricultural products (Crosby, 74). It is significant to note that the Europeans introduced several plants and animals to the lands of their colonies. Such were associated with several diseases that affected the native inhabitants, their health, soils as well as properties in various ways. My thesis is that Crosby’s ecological approach, which emphasizes the “portmanteau biota”, is important because it puts human demography into the context of plant and animal life.

Ecological imperialism refers to the notion that the European settlers became successful in conquering their colonies using several means. One of the reasons that ensured the success of colonization of the Europeans was the introduction of animals to the foreign nations that they conquered. Some of these animals acted as vectors of certain diseases that could be spread to human beings. These animals introduced several pathogenic infections as well as diseases to the native people who were colonized by the Europeans (Miller and Elizabeth, 58). This led to massive drop in population of the native individuals following the fact that they were not used to such diseases. However, the Europeans continued to gain their success over such diseases following the fact that they were well adapted to them following the fact that they have been living with such disease and animals in their lands of origin. In addition, the success of the individuals from Europe succeeded following the introduction of several plants to the lands of the colonies (Crosby, 79). Such plants were termed alien or invasive species of plants.

The invasive species always impact negatively on the environments in the foreign lands. The Europeans were so much aware of this fact. That is the reason they came up with such plants including weeds. The native inhabitants of the colonial lands did not know how to deal with the problems resulting from such weeds. As such, their agricultural production potentials were greatly hampered and reduced by such weeds. However, on the side of the Europeans who were the colonizers, their agricultural production potentials intensively magnified following the fact that they had prior exposure and requisite knowledge to deal with such problems emanating from such invasive plants (Crosby, 58).

It is of crucial significance to note that the European colonization o America happened in the period of 1492 to the year 1800. The dream of the Europeans to colonize the American land was inspired by the quest for richness (Miller and Elizabeth, 53). The Europeans wanted to become rich thereby started their exploration across the Atlantic. During such period of colonization, the total population of the native Americans was not clearly defined. However, the most remarkable incidence was the rapid decline in population of the Americans following the period of colonization. The massive decline took place between the years 1492 and the year 1800. This follows the increase in spread of diseases that were introduced by the colonialists.

The European colonialists brought several diseases to the foreign colonial territories. Alien vectors including the animals they came with transferred some of these diseases to the Native Americans. Some of these European diseases included the smallpox as well as influenza (Crosby, 74). Other diseases included bubonic plagues as well as pneumonic plagues. These diseases did major havoc to the American populations thereby leading to massive drop in their populations. These diseases massively affected the American population since they had never had prior exposure to such diseases. However, the Europeans had an advantage over such diseases since they had prior exposure thus, were not affected so much.

In addition, the European conquest was successful following the introduction of the alien plant species (Miller and Elizabeth, 67). Such species posed major challenges to the native Americans. They affected the crop fields thereby affecting the production potentials of such field. This led to decrease in crop production by the Americans. The Americans did not have prior exposure to such conditions, thus were unaware of measures to curb and mitigate such problems presented by those alien plant species (Miller and Elizabeth, 69). This exposed them to increased cases of food crisis thus contributing to loss of lives. This also contributed towards decrease in population of the Americans in the period between 1492 and 1800. The alien plant species also affected the soils in various ways, thereby reducing the quality of soil thereby reducing the agricultural production potentials of the Americans leading to food shortage and ultimately population decline. However, the Europeans had prior exposure to such conditions. As such, they could easily manage the problems presented by such plants since they were of their native origins.

The introduction of alien species of animals also made the Europeans successful in the conquest of America. Some of those animals included pests, rodents, worms and pigs. These animals acted as vectors of several diseases that were transferrable to human beings (Miller and Elizabeth, 57). The major carriers of diseases included the mice, rats as well as worms. These affected the Native American populations thereby leading to significant drops in the American demographics in the colonial periods. This offered colonial advantage to the Europeans over the Americans during those periods.

Health Care Reform (ACA)

Abstract

Affordable Care Act offers the United States citizens with superior health security by establishing complete health insurance improvements that can increase coverage, hold insurance corporations answerable, promise additional choice, and improve the quality of care for the American people. The Act was approved by the Congress and then put into law in 2010. According to the American constitution, this reform is believed to be unconstitutional. Therefore, it is expected to have a number of effects to patients, doctors, and the general public. ACA has numerous provisions that provide additional rights to the citizens (Tate 85). The paper will mainly discuss a reform proposal for some aspect of the American political and government system.

Introduction

Since the signing Affordable Care Act into law, the government has worked with other responsible parties to establish major implementation precedence and offer the assistance required to prepare for the important improvements to Medicaid. The act ensures that there is minimum Medicaid income desirable level to all the poor Americans. For instance, the federal government stated that it will start funding all the desirable adults at the start of 2014. Additionally, it expects to phase down more than 90 percent at the end of 2020. Conversely, this reform is anticipated to have a number of effects to patients, doctors, and the general public hence this creates the need to have an attractive health care reform.

Health Care Reform

The most appropriate health care reform is the reduction of the authorities of the Congress to control, authorize, ban, or tax the personal health care insurance for any individual. The above reform will make the Act to be constitutional as it is currently considered as unconstitutional. Therefore, without the enactment and implementation of this reform proposal, Affordable Care Act is expected to have more effects in the patients, doctors and the general public.

The Unconstitutional of ACA

Affordable Care Act is considered to be unconstitutional because it does not have the severability clause which was supposed to be introduced by the Congress. Therefore, this law is currently being disputed in Florida case. The two disputed issues in the ACA include the provision that provision that every individual must purchase insurance and the expansion of Medicaid.

Effects of the Affordable Care Act

Affordable Care Act will have a number of effects to the doctors, patients and the general public. For instance, general practitioners will have to face additional government regulations and supervision. They will also entirely depend on the funds provided by the government, which is always considered as unpredictable. According to a number of researches carried out, many doctors are not positive about the future of medicine (Moffat, para 1). Some had also stated that they would consider moving out of the health programs organized and supported by the government. This Act does not significantly change the whole outline of the government’s system doctor payment. Instead, it improves their achievements and creates additional regulatory restrictions. For instance, at the start of 2010, a new law which does not have enough exceptions will ban medical practitioners from referring patients to their hospitals. Since the doctors will depend in the funds provided by the government, there will not be enough medicine to take care of the patients. Other restrictions on the doctors will also affect the general public since this is expected to affect the quality of health care.

Conclusion

Considering the numerous effects of Affordable Care Act, it would be necessary for the government to consider implementing the provided health care reform. This is expected to improve the quality of health care to all the American citizens. The reform is also anticipated to provide answers to the current debate on the viability of this Act.

African Civilizations: Take-Home Midterm Exam

Essay 1

Question 1

It has long been accepted by historians that African kingdoms existed, and they had similarities and differences in the way they conducted their affairs. The paper will analyze some of the early political kingdoms, such as the ones that existed in West Africa and Southern Africa. In West Africa, the prominent kingdoms were Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, while the main ones in central and Southern Africa were the Kongo and Great Zimbabwe (Lecture). These states or political systems had unique attributes, making them stand out from the rest. Long before Europeans reached the African continent, these kingdoms and political systems had structures and procedures that ensured their survival; they thrived because every member of society knew their place and role in society. Accordingly, movement from one place to another upset the economic balance between the pastoralists and agriculturalists, led to the introduction of foreign religions, and ensured they united against their foes.

In Western Africa, the kingdoms had recognized political leaders and religious leaders. There existed a hierarchy, where every member of the kingdom played a specific role. In the same way, they engaged in agriculture, where the proceeds were sold under the barter trade system. Rulers presided over elaborate cultural ceremonies and customs, where dance, music, and art flourished. There existed merchants who traded vital goods such as salt and gold. In Western and Southern Africa states, similarities were evident in the administrative machinery, the centralized authority, and the judicial system that ensured everyone followed the law. In the same way, wealth cleavages and privilege corresponded with the authority and power a family or individual held. In most cases, leadership was hereditary, and authority often went to the eldest son. In essence, the kingdoms had structures that ensued people obeyed the law, respected their neighbors’ property, and played a role in advancing the interests of the people.

In Southern Africa, the first significant kingdom was Great Zimbabwe, the ruler governed assisted by a court drawn from his family members and religious or military rulers. In far-off lands, the king appointed governors who ruled on his behalf. The center of power was in the current ruins of Zimbabwe, which equally shows that the center served as an important trading outpost (Lecture). Great Zimbabwe appears to have been a stratified society, where livestock herders, farmers, artisans, and ordinary people played various important roles. In essence, the kingdom was part of a global network of trade as evidenced by the finding of pottery from far-flung areas. On the other hand, the Kongo kingdom was located in central and west Africa and appears to have been a federation made up of small polities. The King of Kongo kept a close eye on the people because the kingdom was densely populated areas. The succession system was complex and was prone to regular disputes. The kingdom often engaged in wars with other kingdoms, probably because of competition for influence and trade routes. Thus, the kingdoms of Western and Central, and Southern Africa had unique systems that ensured people kept law and order and contributed to the development of their kingdom. There were clear systems of leadership and succession and people engaged in trade and agriculture. These developments ensured that every member of the kingdom played his role in advancing the interests of the population.

Analysis of the kingdoms shows certain patterns in early African state-making. For example, there existed feuds with neighbors because of the control of resources, but each kingdom had clearly defined leadership with elaborate judicial and administrative systems. Most engaged in various activities for survival, such as agriculture and trade. Every member of the kingdom had defined roles and was important in making the kingdom thrive. Whenever disputes arose, measures were taken to resolve them amicably. Regular migration was part of the people’s lives, often prompted by scarce resources. In essence, early state-making in Africa took various forms, but the most important was the stratified nature of society, defined leadership with succession plans, religious leaders, and political leaders who guided communities in conducting various cultural ceremonies. Wars were common, as was the displacement of people. The above factors were the key drivers of early state-making.

Question 4

Trade and religion were the core drivers of African contact with the outside world. Before the arrival of foreigners, Africans had religions, where they organized themselves and performed religious ceremonies. Equally, they had religious and political leaders who led the people during such ceremonies. The paper will elaborate on the history of Africa, its contact with the outside world, the effects of trade and religion, and resistance as part of the history of Africa and its influence globally.

One of the most important sources of contact between Africa and the external world happened through trade. Arguably, the Trans-Saharan trade was the most important, enabling Africans to come into contact with the outside world. Importantly, the Trans-Saharan trade enabled Africans to strengthen their connections with the Mediterranean region. Apparently, the Sahara was not as harsh as it currently is, enabling people to move vast distances with their trade wares. Events in North Africa were connected to those in West Africa and the Mediterranean region. The contact between West and North Africans enabled the spread of Islam to the other parts of the continent. Ancient cities in West Africa, such as Timbuktu, were important trading, religious, and educational centers, enabling enlightened people to engage in trade with the other regions. Muslims and worshippers of the numerous other African religions co-existed peacefully, and the caravan trade was organized effectively. The emergence of trade networks was an important driver of trade and enabled Africans to trade in gold, sculpture, and numerous other items.

One important effect of the contact between Africans and the outside world was the emergence of trading centers. These centers served an important role, especially in the exchange of cultural practices. On the same note, they became valuable religious centers, especially for Islam. Equally, they served as centers for scholarly production, where literacy and Arabic were important, further fueling the spread of Islam. Understandably, rulers maintained their leadership and religious structures, but the influence of the contact was evident. For instance, they introduced the law, taxation, and learning institutions to spread literacy and religion.

The contact between Africa and the outside world had positive and negative effects. On the positive side, it enabled the spread of literacy and religion as most people in the outside world embraced religion other than the ones practiced in Africa. Equally, Africans managed to sell their wares to foreigners, especially gold and ivory, while they purchased salt and other valuable items from far-flung areas. The art forms practiced in the Mediterranean found their way to Africa, while some art forms were taken to Europe and the Middle East. On the other hand, there was a significant effect on the structures of African communities as rulers introduced taxation and the law (Sunjata and Africanus 119). The regular movement of people across vast regions enabled the spread of diseases and had adverse effects on the environment. On the other hand, some rulers gave foreigners valuable gold as they made their way to Mecca for the annual pilgrimage, such as Mansa Musa.

In essence, the contact between Africa and the outside world had religious, economic, and political consequences. On the economic front, it strengthened trade ties and led to the establishment of various important trade routes and centers. Religiously, they led to the spread of Islam and other foreign languages but occasioned the decline of African indigenous religions. Political reorganizations emerged with tremendous effects in all parts of Africa. In this regard, one could argue that political, social, and economic transformation shaped the globalization that followed. Colonialism brought numerous changes across Africa, affecting nearly every aspect of Africans’ lives. Attempt to control valuable trade routes led to feuds because they were important to the existence of the kingdoms. In essence, trade and trade routes lead to the exchange of goods, currency, religion, and technology, and this is evident between Africa and other world religions. The spread of alien diseases was inevitable, as were the intermittent clashes that occurred. In this regard, some of the developments that were later witnessed across the African continent could not have been possible without the emergence of trade and the outcomes.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Background to the study

The friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers is termed as hospitality.

While hospitality means hospitable treatment, reception, or disposition, friendly, welcoming, and generous treatment offered to guests or strangers.

Hospital is an institution for diagnosing, treating the sick or injured, housing them during treatment, examining patients, and managing childbirth. They may be public (government-owned) or private (profit-making or not-for-profit). They may also be general, accepting all types of medical or surgical cases, or special (e.g., children’s hospitals, mental hospitals), limiting service to a single type of patient or illness. It is also said to be a  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care” o “Health care” health care institution providing  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patient” o “Patient” patient treatment by specialized staff and equipment. Usually HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publicly_funded_healthcare” o “Publicly funded healthcare” funded by the public sector, health organizations ( HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For-profit_hospital” o “For-profit hospital” for profit or  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit_organization” o “Non-profit organization” nonprofit),  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_insurance” o “Health insurance” health insurance companies, or  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charitable_organization” o “Charitable organization” charities, including direct charitable donations. Hospitals were historically founded and funded by  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_orders” o “Religious orders” religious orders or charitable individuals and leaders. Today, they are largely staffed by professional  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physician” o “Physician” physicians,  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon” o “Surgeon” surgeons, and  HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurse” o “Nurse” nurses, whereas in the past, this work was usually performed by the founding religious orders or by HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteering” o “Volunteering” volunteers.

Hospitality and food within hospitals will to some extent vary. As mentioned initially, private hospitals are in most instances profit making. Their setup will consist of quality services and apparatus mainly to attract more customers through the services offered. Therefore, the quality of foodstuff in private hospitals will be to a larger extent be good. This is also attributed to the number of patients being handled by the hospital at a particular time. The lesser the number, the higher the quality of services based on the rate of charges for diseases an individual is diagnosed for. On the other hand, public hospitals are in most cases government owned. The quality of services offered may be slightly lower but this is attributed to a larger extent by the customer base. Rates of bills in such hospitals are subsidized meaning most low income earners will frequent the hospitals. Due to many patients, the quality of food for them will also be low.

Private hospitals will have quite a number of departments and key to that will be the catering department. In most cases, high qualified personnel will fill in positions under this department and they proceed to do a job they are trained in, qualified and experienced. On the other hand, public hospitals will have just a kitchen where the food for patients will be prepared from. Chances are high that qualified personnel may be understaffed meaning quality of food for patients is low. As the hospital again deals with so many clients, the few staff may not be in a position to prepare nice meals.

Hospitals will therefore incorporate hospitality managers, persons with speciality in hospitality industry.

Eugenics

Eugenics refers to the scientific study or a belief that it is possible to improve the human race through genetics and by discouraging people with undesirable traits or genetic defects from reproduction. The fundamental aspect is to encourage reproduction by people who possess desirable traits- positive eugenics. Eugenics is a social philosophy that was promoted worldwide in the 20th century by influential individuals and governments with the aims of improving the adaptation of future populations. Various sources seek to explore the background, philosophical aspects, effects, and dynamics of eugenics.

Currell, S, & Christina, C. (2006). Popular Eugenics: National Efficiency and American Mass Culture in the 1930s. Athens, OH: Ohio University Press. This article discusses history of eugenics from the 1930s. The book features the logo of a tree depicting eugenics as a social philosophy science that integrates diverse fields of study and social life. The article explores the diversity of historical American mass cultures in relation to the national policies on population growth and reproduction. The authors’ primary argument is that eugenics, in the historical American mass culture, offers the most important information and explanation why drastic policies received tremendous support during the sense of class superiority and racial bias.

Glad, John (2008). Future Human Evolution: Eugenics in the Twenty-First Century . Hermitage Publishers. According to Glad (2006), Holocaust was the primary contributor to the historical warfare and not eugenics as many scholars and philosophers argue. The article explores the dynamics and contributing factors that led to the adoption of positive eugenics by the developed economies. The article explores eugenic movement as a global phenomenon with robust supporting programs in North America and Europe before the Second World War. Glad (2008) explores the effects of the Great War coupled with the subsequent era of the Great Depression that mentally undermined human existence and the creation of privileged classes especially in the West. He also explores the effects of eugenics activities on existence of the human society.

Meisenberg, G. (2009). “Wealth, intelligence, politics and global fertility differentials”. Journal of Biosocial Science 41(4): 519–535. Meisenberg (2009) seeks to investigate whether the current demographics and economic indicators of human populations, such as wealth, liberal democracy, and modern politics, create any significant fertility differences. The study also seeks to establish whether these primary indicators of economic development affect human IQ. According to the study, positive eugenics has a direct impact on human IQ development. Additionally, measures of intelligence also reduce human fertility while effects of liberal democracy have weak and inconsistent relations to fertility. This article is important for analyzing the effects of global fertility with respect to indicators of economic progress.

Black, E. (2004). War against the weak: Eugenics and America’s campaign to create a master race. New York, NY: Thunder’s Mouth Press. This book is an informative article on the atrocities and issues of American engineering in the involvement of trying to create a superior race. Additionally, the book gives a detailed perspective and proponent activities on American eugenics developments to culture a master race especially in the 20th century. Black also analyzes the possible involvement of America in the Nazi movement that led to the Holocaust. His central argument is that the US elites propelled the Nazi racial manifestations by initiating the idea and possibility of creating a superior Aryan race through selective breeding and passed the idea to the Nazis.

I had a surprising and mixed feeling when I went to church for the first time in my life. I totally felt that I betrayed my people who are Muslims from the Middle East by entering the church, leave alone worshipping with Christians. My palms were sweating and I could not even properly listen to the preacher well due to my lack of concentration. I was not able to understand how in the same universe, there exists completely different religions that share much in common. I absolutely felt withdrawn and very lonely for not being able to embrace religion that my friends enjoyed without any difficulty. I wondered if my friends would identify a mosque as a different place as I thought the church was at that particular time.

Having been brought up in a deeply rooted Islamic culture, I had never associated myself with any other religion before but I knew about their existence. My prior knowledge concerning Christianity and the urge to prove what really happens in other religions however helped me to gain some confidence, which could not be sufficient to withstand uneasiness. I thought it unfair to have religious differences such as one religion dominating a particular region of the world. As an Arab amongst the congregation, I appeared odd and abandoned due to the hijab I was wearing unlike the brotherly and familiar feeling I usually have when I attend mosques. In fact, at some point I could hide my face when I realized that someone within the congregation was staring at me.

The similarity between the church and the mosque is that the attendees recognize their way of worshipping and religious status as the best compared to others. There is uniformity in the way Christians and Muslims carry out their prayers when they are in their prayer gatherings. Christians do have a pastor who conducts the prayers as it is in mosques where there are Imams guiding Muslims in worship. Additionally, there are two different holy books used by the two distinctively different religions by their respective followers in worshiping. Interestingly, the two different religions believe in God whom they respect and fear (Stefon, 2010). Quran and the bible share most of the stories especially in the Old Testament such as the stories of Moses and Abraham that really connects the two religions. I further realized that Christians also believe in continuous prayers at specific times such as in the evening and early mornings just like Muslims. Additionally, both religions do have almost similar believe concerning family issues such as women submitting to their husbands and prohibition of sex before marriage.

However, there are numerous beliefs that both religions do not agree on such as the existence of trinity according to Christians’ beliefs and the fact that Jesus is a son of God as claimed by Christians. Muslims believe that Jesus was a human prophet and not divine as claimed by Christians and that there is only one God who is the creature of the universe. Muslims further believe that God who is referred to, as Allah is the father to everyone and that there is nothing special or divine about Jesus that should make him worshiped directly or indirectly. Muslims also believe in original sin and that Jesus did not die on the cross to save humanity from sin but instead God made it to appear so. Christians strongly believe in salvation in the name of Jesus to cleanse their original sins that Muslims are strongly opposed to (Raisanen 2010).

My perception towards Christianity is influenced by the Islamic belief that Jesus was not God’s begotten son hence should not be worshiped as Christians do since he was just a prophet and a great teacher. Additionally, Muslims consider that calling Jesus God or son of God is blasphemy and that there is no day God’s word has never existed. Muslims do not believe that Jesus died for our sins as claimed by Christians that all their (Christians) sins were forgiven after the death of Jesus on the cross. Muslims regard themselves as perfect and the true followers of Jesus teachings since the current bible is altered. Muslims consider Christianity as a satanic product and a way of deceit to the world especially to the Roman Empire. However, I strongly believe that Christians too worship the same God just as Muslims but differ in a few believes (Johnson 2010).

There is a belief by most people that all Arabs are strong Muslims and that they cannot go to church. The majority of people from the Middle East prophesy Islamic faith thus making it unique for any race from the Middle East to be a Christian. My presence in church puzzled many whites who were in the congregation from the way they were staring at me. Nearly all whites and a few blacks thought that I was just investigating something and that it was strange for an Arab to confess Christian faith. Fascinatingly, many whites construe Arabs as terrorists and violent people who could die for their faith. My presence in church made the congregation insecure especially after the 9/11 attacks that is believed to have been instigated by the late Osama bin Laden who was unfortunately an Arab.

The white colleagues enjoyed a bit of privileges compared to me perhaps because they were the usual race expected in the church. While entering the church with my white friends, the ushers who were standing at the church entrance only welcomed my colleagues with broad smiles and a warm handshake. Nonetheless, the ushers stared at me surprisingly without even a single word uttered to me. The security officers drew closer to me maybe to confirm what I wanted in such a holy place where I was least expected. The ushers directed me to the position far away from the preacher possibly because of my race or due to the threat I posed to the congregation.

Church attendance was not something ordinary as far as whites and even Arabs are concerned. I am in fact, expected to worship on Friday instead of on a Sunday as a Muslim. It was unusual getting into a place of worship with shoes, which is against Islamic belief. A holy place can only be entered with bare foot, which is further washed even after removing the shoes. I found it weird worshipping together with the opposite sex and even sitting beside them unlike in the mosques where women and men do not mix. It was interesting sitting on comfortable chairs during worship instead of crossing our legs while sitting on the soft carpet (Stefon 2010).

Existence of different ethnic groups and various races are issues beyond human scope that need collective responsibility to eliminate. Social evil or negative attitudes towards any human race, ethnic group, and religion should be matters of the past. Because of doing this paper, I realized that racism and disregard to the minority is still a major concern in most parts of the world especially between the whites and the Arabs. Whites are usually considered as the superior race by other races such as blacks and Arabs. Societal injustices based on racism and ethnicity is an issue that is brought about by historical injustices. There are some beliefs amongst the society that there are specific places of worship and even social places that are only meant for some races. The issue of minority groups’ concern has not been well addressed by most administrations. Coexistence of most races or ethnicities and the need to respect all races, ethnicities, and minority groups should be addressed to maintain unity and peace amongst humanity.

After the church attendance, I came to realize that I may at times, not be appreciated by my fellow human beings simply because I do not belong to their race, religion, or ethnic group. I further understood that I personally do not appreciate the fact that most people confess different religions that existed in their regions of origin. Initially, I had never imagined that I would one-day step into a church building due to the strong Islamic beliefs instilled in me by my parents and the society. This paper has made me understand and appreciate the beliefs of the Christianity religion as well as their take on Islamic religion. By doing this paper, I further extended my Islamic knowledge by reading some of the Islamic materials. I have actually learnt while doing this work via thorough reading that Muslims and Christians share most of the things.
