Moral pluralism

Moral Pluralism

Abstract

There are several conflicting theories within the moral domain in regard to good and wrong. In the process of determining the level of truth, an important is played by personal interpretations and judgments. In attempting to live together in a society, there are so many challenges in appreciating the authenticity of conflicting views and establishment of levels of agreement. This paper explores what moral pluralism is and the differences between the different levels.

Moral pluralism refers to the assumption that moral truths exist. However, it is worth noting that this assumption does not form the basis of rationality and reliability of truths in comparison to those found in scientific and mathematical approaches (Richardson & Williams, 2008). There are varied views in regard to moral pluralism, for example, some people believe that actions that yield positive results are morally good.

There is a plurality of values and principles relevant to moral judgment that cannot be reduced. In the principle of utilitarianism, there is a belief that morally important considerations can be quantified into pain or pleasure while Kantian theory asserts that all forms of moral judgment can be reduced to a single principle which has to do with rationality and the individuals bearing rationality. Moral pluralism is not subject to complete ordering of rationality. Therefore, it is believed that no procedure or principle can exist without a unique or determinate solution of a moral question that involves choices in moral values and principles (Sneddon, 2011).

There is a belief that the most important aspect of different levels of morality includes relative majority of duties and values. For the rest of morality, it is believed that equality and general wellbeing are the core values. The foundational level of morality is made up of actions that do not harm others and do not facilitate taking of other people’s possessions. Also, other similar pluralistic theories believe that an individual does not need to break promises, to tell lies and rather some individual needs to go an extra mile in showing concern for individuals with special connections. Several versions of moral pluralism are founded and based on such lists of values and duties (Davis, 2004).

In addition, most pluralists believe that there are no strict rationales of precedence that seeks to resolve conflicts that might arise among the actions and values on which they are based. In this regard, there is need to utilize values of judgment so as to resolve conflicts among actions and values of moral pluralism. However, the assumption of moral truths fails to provide any procedure for moral advisement.

Also, the truths upon which moral pluralism is based are not coherent and consistent. There are conflicting theories within the moral domain in relation to rightness and goodness and each of the many theories contain realities about moral life though none of them is comprised of the whole truth (Moon, 2012).

Most activities in the society raise a lot of questions in regard to the type of morality that is guiding the members of the different societies. There are common actions that show that the moral standards are low, for example killing without remorse and dehumanization of each other. This is because the modern society is diverse and heterogeneous in composition. Also, the various cultures and traditions in the society are dynamic and pluralistic in several ways. However, it is unfortunate that pluralistic aspects of moralism are widening over time (Hinman, 2008).

There are four levels of moral pluralism; radical moral pluralism, pluralism of moral practices, pluralism of self-realization and radical moral pluralism. Radical moral pluralism is a level that describes a situation in which people hold different views about morality. However, the believers in this have divergent and radical views yet they do not form the society entirely (Timmons, 2012). In a society, a group needs to be in agreement with certain crucial principles and practices. It is important for members of any society to have a general agreement of the fact that life is worth living and that the lives of all members of the society need to be respected.

However, it is hard to convince those who do not care whether they live or die because it is almost impossible to inform them that they are mistaken. Such people do not form a society because morality is a shared responsibility for all members of a society. It is important to note that a society may be morally pluralistic on the basis of the other levels (Hinman, 2008).

Pluralism of moral practices implies compatibility with social agreement on morality of several basic patterns. However, such agreements do not involve agreements on the variation on the use of moral principles to evaluate actions. In as much as several people believe that murder is wrong, there are members of the society who operate at conventional morality. In regard to murder, there are different moral principles that are compatible to different moral assessment.

Radical moral pluralism refers to moral practices that come from differences in moral principles, differences of facts, differences in circumstances and differences in perception of facts. At this level of moral pluralism, most moral issues are not clear. The developing modern society provides room for moral disagreement. However, in most areas of agreement there is compatibility of agreeable moral practices.

Pluralism of self-realization provides that as long as members of the society adhere to laid down moral norms, they are allowed to make choices on their values and lifestyles. It is a kind of moral pluralism that provides for crucial aspects of moral pluralism such as self-fulfillment and development. Such a society tolerates several differences that cannot be found in a homogeneous society (McDonald, 2011).

Introduction

The healthcare reform is a move that seeks to improve the medical sector of the country. The reform ensures that all Americans have access to healthcare, so it expands access to insurance. It also ensures that physicians get merit based on quality and not quantity. All physicians wanted the merit from the government, so they struggled to treat as many patients as possible to achieve this goal. This enhanced poor services because they did not give a patient the attention the needed. They also neglected some of the procedures to be able to attend to as many as possible. They also released patients before they fully recovered and did not give respect the rights of the patients. The government became aware of such misconducts and decided to create rules and principles that would enhance the quality of service offered to a patient. This led to the emergence of healthcare ethic. Healthcare ethics are the values and principles used for making decisions in the medical field (Oslon, 2012). The healthcare sector requires these set of rules because there are many instances where a physician may want to act out of turn (Morrison and Monagle, 2009). The physicians must know that the patients have their rights and can also choose what they want with their lives as well as their bodies (Pozgar, 2004). The values and principles and values also guide physicians when making medical decisions. The healthcare is a sector that had various controversies for a long period. Many people draw their concerns on the moral aspect of the healthcare sector. There are claims that the healthcare sector violates various natural rights of the American citizens. Ethical issues arise in healthcare when a physician has to violate some of the rule for the benefit of the society. Most judgments made in the healthcare sector not only focus on the individual but also the society. The healthcare reform, also known as Obamacare, aims at solving some of the problems in the healthcare sector. The ethical issues in healthcare have an immense on diagnostic medical imaging procedures. Regulation of dose monitoring is also an aspect that may affect the health of the patient. Dose monitoring is a vital procedure in the diagnosis of a patient. It involves use of radiation to determine the appropriate doses for the patients. It also eases the work of radiologists, so they spend a short time making analysis of each patient. The healthcare reform regulates such activities and this may have a negative impact on the health of a patient. The analysis of the healthcare reform reveals ethical issues and their impact on diagnostic medical imaging procedures, and how dose monitoring affects the health of a patient.

Morality of Healthcare Reform

There are various ethical issues in the healthcare sector, but many people appreciate the reform because it solves some of the societal problems. Prioritization of many activities in healthcare depends on importance. This means that some patients may have priority over others. This is violation of the natural rights since all Americans are equal. All patients have equal importance, so this aspect brings ethical issues. A patient with minor injuries may feel neglected if the physician leaves him to deal with another with major injuries. In the past, the healthcare sector used the first come first served basis to provide services to its patient. Some patients used to die while waiting for their turn. The government thought that there was no need of giving priority to a patient who has minor problems instead of a critical one. This led to the introduction of service according to importance. This would reduce the number of deaths on the waiting line.

According to the healthcare reform, physicians should maintain the privacy of all patients (Follin, 2004). The police department requires them to disclose information regarding the case of a criminal. This brings ethical issues because the criminal also has natural rights. The court also prohibits the disclosure of the patient’s medical reports to other parties, but there are instances when the physician has to disclose this information for the benefit of the society. This creates ethical problems because the physician has to reveal the medical status of the criminal to help police in investigations, and to help the court determine whether the criminal had a perfect mental state when they committed the crime. The report may also reveal whether the substance abuse enhanced the criminal acts. For this reason, the physicians have to release such details because the life of the criminal and that of other members of the society is at stake. There are also cases when they discover a gunshot wound on a patient, so they must inform the police department. This will help the police to find the person who fired the bullet and also other details that may prevent reoccurrence of such acts. The physicians may also break the rule if a patient has a sexually transmitted disease and the spouse has no idea. The spouse should know about the sexual status of their partner. In case a patient has HIV/AIDS, the spouse should know for safety measures. The partner may use the information to determine the necessity of a checkup. If the spouse also realizes that they have the disease, they will also take the necessary measures that will help them survive. The disclosure may also make the partners determine the course of their sexually transmitted disease to find the most efficient preventive measures. Underage abortion is also another case that causes ethical problems. The parents of this patient must be aware about the act. The disclosure of such information will help the parents to take preventive measures that will help the girl avoid unwanted pregnancies. The parents may also take extra care of the other children in the family to avoid the risk in future. Revealing of medical reports is a move that aims at enhancing the lives of the community. If a physician does not release reports concerning gunshot wounds, they may be putting various people’s lives at risk. This is because the gun shot may be from a serial killer who is still committing murder, or it may be from a violent spouse or family member. The physicians have to give information concerning abortion to reduce such cases in the society and prevent children from putting themselves in compromising situations.

Physicians should support the decisions and choices of their patients even if they do not have a positive impact on their health. This principle may bring ethical issues when the patient may make the wrong choices. For instance, when a cancer patient refuses to go for chemotherapy, the physician may have to go against the will of the patient to save their life. A physician may also have to find better ways of advising the patient on the benefits of the medication they should get. This will help the patient understand why they should accept the physician’s advice. Some patients may refuse some medications because of allergies. In such cases, the physician should carry out the necessary tests to find out whether the patient’s claims are valid. In case the patient’s claim is true, then the physician should find alternatives for the medication or they should prove to the patient that the medication will not affect them.

The healthcare reform does allow the physicians to treat the decisions of their patients as their own and should also make decisions for patients who are not fit to make their own choices. A patient may come to the hospital claiming that they have a chronic disease. The physician should carry out the necessary procedures to make their own conclusions. Before the reform, the physicians gathered relevant information from the patients for diagnosis. This was a move that reduced the procedures involved in giving treatment. Physicians used this tactic to increase the number of patients they attend to on a daily basis. The introduction of quality care encouraged physicians to offer services that impress their patients. The physician may ask for previous medication to determine the appropriateness of the medication they may want to offer. The aspect of quality healthcare may also have negative sides. A physician may carry out unnecessary procedures to impress a patient. This increases medical costs in the healthcare department.

Patients in a critical condition may not have the ability to make sound decisions, so the physician must make the most beneficial choice to on behalf of the patient (Payne-James, Jones, Karch and Manlove, 2011). Physicians should take actions that enhance the patient’s health. Patients with mental problems also require the help of the physician to make sound decisions. The healthcare reform also advises physicians against decisions based on gender, race or class. In this case ethical issues arise when a patient has extra cash and demands for unnecessary tests or medication. The physician should provide their services equally. Ethical issues may arise when a patient does not have adequate funds, but needs extra care for survival. The physician may strive to save the life of the patient then deal with the finances when the patient is in a stable condition. The main objective of all physicians is to save lives. A white physician should value the life of a black physician and vice versa. A male physician should respect the decisions of a female patient. Male chauvinism is not encouraged in the medical sector. If a patient feels comfortable with a male or female physician, they can make their request. A male physician should not force a female patient to accept their services.

Physicians should also decide the amount of time to give each patient based on their capability to pay for the services and their medication process. Ethical issues may arise when a patient requires more time with the physician but they cannot afford. A patient with more than enough may also demand for a longer stay, yet they are fit to go home. In such cases the physicians should take actions that improve the lives of the patients.

Physicians also encounter ethical issues because they do not know the extent of basic healthcare. The government has not identified the limits of basic healthcare, so physicians may not know to what extent they should provide their services. Abortion is also a controversial issue in America. Many people, including physicians, have varying opinions on the matter. The healthcare reform requires all the physicians to respect the decisions of their patients. This means that if a patient demands that they want an abortion, the physician must obey their request. If the physician is against the act, they may refuse to agree with the patient. This is an ethical dilemma because the physician feels that the patient did not make the correct choice. The healthcare reform takes care of such issues by allowing the physician to refer the patient to another colleague who can handle the matter.

The healthcare sector is a business that has moral issues. These issues should not affect the running of the business or the employees in the sector. The healthcare sector aims at improving the lives of patients, but it is also a business that requires profits for effectiveness. The institutions should make enough money to take care of medical expenses, which the government does not provide. Some of the moral issues arise because the institution has to make profits and take care of its patients at the same time. Whine a patient demands for extra care, the physician will provide the service to increase profits. All businesses including hospitals have a corporate responsibility (Shaw and Barry, 2013). They hospitals have to ensure that the patients respect their staff, the government requires taxes form the business, the local authorities also require the hospital to follow the rules and obey the law, the patients demand quality service and the community also requires the business to give back to them by funding other valuable projects. Justice and economic distribution are vital aspects in the healthcare sector.

Impact on Medical Imaging Procedures

The healthcare reform has a significant impact on the medical imaging procedures. The imaging volume, the cost of the exams to the system and the ability to put up with the extra volume are the main perspectives that help to quantify the impact. The reform gives a number of uninsured people some degree of medical coverage. This means that there will be an increase in the number of new exams driven to imaging. The previous act did not allow the uninsured to get medical imaging services. The patients used their money to get these services. Patients can also demand the services they require from the physician. This gives them the right to demand for imaging services to ensure that the doctor understands their problem. This also leads to increased volumes in the medical imaging department. The reform also ensures that healthcare is affordable. This has increased the bracket of those who can afford medical imaging. The management of these immense numbers requires various institutions to make drastic changes in terms of technology and the capacity involved. The immense numbers require an institution to increase the staff members to enhance the services. The hours of service will also increase to handle the immense volumes within the required time. The institutions also require immense technology to provide efficient services. The new volume also demands for an increase in the salaries of all the parties involved in the process. This will also lead to an increase in other medical sectors for the institution to make profits. It may also decrease the quality of the procedures. As mentioned earlier, the healthcare sector is a business that also needs to make profits. The individuals who offer this service may have to ignore some of the processes to cater for the massive volumes in the medical imaging centers.

Patients have the right to make choices concerning their medication. Patients may demand for imaging services to ensure that they get quality service. This process alters the imaging procedures because the demand may be unnecessary. The patient may have to book an appointment to get the service. This will take up time needed for necessary imaging services. The healthcare reform also impacts the medical imaging procedures because when a physician suggest unnecessary imaging to impress the customer.

There are positive impacts on the medical imaging procedures. The healthcare reform will increase competition because all physicians the patients who require imaging get quality services to maintain the name of the institution. The competition will lead to installation of excellent equipment and vast technology to improve the quality of the image. Physicians will make accurate decisions that will enhance the patient’s health. The imaging services are essential because they help the physician to examine the inner organs of their patients. The reports given by radiologists will help determine the most appropriate medication.

How Regulation of Dose Monitoring May Affect Patient Care and Treatment Options in Business

Radiation dose monitoring is essential because it reduces human errors, protects system abuse and saves the time of the radiologists and technologists. It also reduces expenditure caused by inappropriate exams. Radiation dose monitoring determines the accumulated dose of the patient. This information is vital because it gives the radiologists adequate information concerning the most effective technology for examination. Referring physicians require the information from these activities to make proper referrals. The system also alerts the radiologists when the radiation dose goes beyond defined thresholds (Baim and Grossman, 2005). It also enhances preventive treatment in cases where the patient receives high radiation dose. The system also improves management of protocol. Protocols have an effect on the radiation dose and image quality. It also ensures that radiologists follow policies and procedures to maintain low patient doses. They also help physicians to determine whether the risks involved in imaging examinations outweigh the benefits (National Research Council and National Academies Press, 2012). Post procedure information provides medical physicists to make dose estimates for patients such as expectant mothers and those with skin erythema due to extensive fluoroscopy examinations. A collection of these data is essential for reviewing radiation dose related strategies. It can also help to understand health impacts of radiation exposure, and the most effective management and measurements.

The healthcare reform has an impact on medical imaging procedure such as dose monitoring. Many people believe that radiation dose monitoring is harmful to their health, so they may refuse to go through the process. This will reduce chances of improving the health of the individuals. Radiologists and other staff members may have a hectic time trying to figure out the most appropriate diagnosis for patients. Regulation of dose monitoring may also lead to poor image quality because the radiologists may not have permission to carry out some of the procedures. Regulation of dose monitoring may also lead to inadequate research materials needed for reducing the effects of dose monitoring. Dose monitoring is a procedure that requires regular research to eliminate all the risks involved. Referring physicians also require such information for credible referrals. Regulation of dose monitoring may affect the reports given to other physicians because they may not have the ability to determine the amount of radiation a patient received. Regulation of dose monitoring may lead to provision of ineffective dose estimates that may affect pregnant women. Regulation of dose monitoring will give patients reason to refuse such procedures. Radiologists may not adhere to the procedures required to keep the doses of the patients low. This is a health risk to the patients because extreme exposure may lead to destruction of internal organs. This may also worsen the condition of the patient. For pregnant women, extensive exposure may lead to the death of their unborn children.

Conclusion

Healthcare reform aims at ensuring that all citizens have access to quality medical care. Many Americans could not access medical care because they had no insurance cover. Physicians also gave inadequate care to the patients because they wanted to make more money. Such aspects called for reforms in the medical sector. The healthcare sector has values and principles that enhance governance. There are cases when ethical issues arise because physicians have to follow the professional ethics in their field and at the same time respect the rights of their patients. Patients have natural rights, so physicians should not violate any of them. There are cases when the physician has to go against the rules for the benefit of the society. When a physician deals with a criminal, they have to give the medical reports of the criminal to the police. They also have to provide the reports of cases such as underage abortion to the parents of the minor. The physicians may also go against the will of their patients to save their lives. The physicians should not discriminate against any patient. They should treat all their patients equally regardless of class, gender or race. The healthcare sector is a business, so they also strive to make profits. They also have corporate goals, which are vital for the progress of any business. The healthcare sector also makes contributions to the society. It can only do so when it makes enough profits. The employees in the sector also require attention because without them, the business will not exist. All this aspects call for morality in the sector. The principles and the values are the key factors that help the healthcare sector to fulfill its corporate responsibility. Medical imaging procedures are also essential in the healthcare sector, so the regulation of dose monitoring has an immense impact on the activities involved in improving the lives of patients. Dose monitoring systems alert the radiologists when the radiation goes beyond. This is significant because it will help the physician to act immediately before the process causes damages. The healthcare reform may have some flaws but at the end of the day, it improves the quality of service in the medical department. The reform reduces the number of deaths caused by lack of proper medical care because it advocates for quality services to a vast population of the American citizens.

Introduction

With one of the oldest civilizations in the country, China has been a key player in the political, social cultural and economic aspect of development. The country continues to dictate in all things business due to their policies that focus on relationships in the international and domestic forces. The economic system of a country plays a significant role in their growth and sustainability. Economic growth is essential for a country in that it provides better living conditions for its citizens. Countries thus have the responsibility to ensure a proper economic system that works of the country. There are several economic systems practiced by different countries across the globe. These systems are reflective of the cultural norms of the society. China prides itself with being a socialist/communist system of government which places emphasis on the wellbeing of the society as opposed to that of an individual. Most of their activities are centered on working towards the greater good of the country (Gambe, 2000).

The focus of this paper is to provide an analysis of an aspect of a specific national political economy that illustrates issues of salience for the study of international political economy as a whole. The paper looks at the political situation of China in this case due to its position as a one of the successful economies. The capitalist development of China is an ideal case in that the country identifies itself as a Socialist state. The look into the changing dynamics of the countries historical developments shows a different perspective of the country’s economy. The paper pays special attention to relations between domestic and international social forces and the states that have combined to create a contemporary situation. The analysis of the situation looks at the issue that the countries faces to date and the recommendations on the way forward. The paper later provides a summary on the content of the paper.

History of socialism in China

As stated earlier, China records a long history in terms of culture, politics and economics. These factors have placed the country in a strategic position that has acted as an advantage to their development. Despite this, it took the country centuries to unite to form a union amongst the many dynasties. 1949 was a pivotal time for the country in that it was officially declared the people’s republic of China. At the forefront of the leadership was Mao who played a significant role in the creation of the republic. One of the features of the newly created state was their system of government that was socialist in nature. The country was previously under the rule of dynasties that is responsible for the creation of the different social classes. The four groups consisted of the elite, the capitalists, the peasants and the workers. The peasants made up for the 90 percentage of the population recording the group with the highest numbers (Gambe, 2000).

All the groups had an allegiance to the CCP which had generated a considerable amount of income from the membership fee. The peasants took advantage of their high population rate becoming a key group in the activities of the party. Mao being the head of the party rallied for better treatment of the peasant majority. He managed to gain leadership of the country succeeding the previous ruler at the time. One of the agendas of the party was to align all the groups so as to create a united community. This entailed uplifting the status of the poor and reducing the authority of the influential society. Becoming a socialist country was thus the way to go for the country so as to meet these requirements. Socialism is defined by the unification of all the assets of the country under the management of the government. The people are encouraged to work to their fullest potential so as to contribute to the general income of the economy. Individuals are limited in regard to the number of investments to undertake (Parry, 2010).

Another essential factor of socialism is that it only recognizes the existence of a one party state as opposed to a multiparty state. Being a one party state places the leader of the republic with a colossal amount of authority. This in turn, gives rise to an autocratic state that gives the ruling party the provision to make all the laws. Socialism initially discourages the interaction between neighboring countries. This is enhanced to promote the unity of the members of the local community. It also improves the business environment in the country owing to the support of the economies businesses. This system of government has been in place for a considerable number of years (Gambe, 2000).

China maintained a rigid socialist system until the introduction of a number of factors that changed the dynamics of the country. One of the factors that influenced the countries approach on socialism was the growth of globalization. Globalization is one of the agents of capitalism due to the interaction between different countries. China is one of the countries that embraced globalization making it change slowly from a socialist state to a developing capitalist state (Tselichtchev, 2012).

Globalization as a factor of Capitalism

Globalization is the exchange of ideas which is brought about as a result of communication, trade, immigration and technology. Globalization involves the interaction of people from different parts of the world creating a globalised world. One of the main effects of globalization is the enhancement of international trade. International trade involves trading in an open market environment. Having an open market allows for countries to remove barriers and sanctions that slow the process of international trade. There are several factors that enhance globalization. One of the factors that have a significant contribution to globalization is capitalism. Capitalism differs from socialism in all aspects making the two opposing system of government. Capitalism encourages members of a community to invest in a variety of franchises in order to maximize on an economies output. This in turn, promotes the rate of development of the country in question. The interaction between different countries during trade requires for free trade to prevail. A country that therefore chooses to invest across the boarders has an aspect of capitalism (Parry, 2010).

Differences between socialism and capitalism

Socialism and capitalism are two opposing theories which differ in more than one element. The study of the two systems is thus ideal in order to understand the varying factors that they both present. It is essential to recognize that both systems share some qualities such as the growth and sustainability of an economy. This however varies in percentage depending on the quality of leadership portrayed. One of the factors that set socialism apart from capitalism is that it limits the activities of the individuals in the state. Persons are expected to work towards the growth of the society as a whole. This discourages individuals to own their own property and carry out large investments. Lastly, socialism disregards the provision of an open market which is essential for the trade between countries in different parts of the globe (Tselichtchev, 2012).

Capitalism is associated with countries located in North America and parts of Europe due to culture that they follow. The features of capitalism differ from that of socialist state which as a result affects the outcome of the economy’s performance. Capitalist states are less rigid with the forms of economic investments that their citizens can partake. The United States is one of the staunch supporters of the capitalist way of life. The system is complemented by the democratic system of government that allows the existence of more than one political party. Democracy thus gives rise to a multiparty state. Members of a democratic economy have the ability to exercise their rights and privileges. This ranges from selecting the type of leaders to represent them in office to the trading in an open market. Capitalism is associated with maximizing on the production so as to increase production. Production leads to the increase in the GDP of an economy which is reflective of living standards of the citizens. Capitalism also poses a number of disadvantages to the community making the system face a lot of criticism in present day. The main effect of capitalism is the creation of an unequal state in terms of distribution of resources. This forms a gap between the wealthy minority and the poor who make up the largest percentage of the population (Parry, 2010).

Implications of capitalism in China

China is arguably one of the most developed economies to date. This is credited to their no nonsense culture that reveres hard work. As stated earlier, the country follows the socialist system of government that discourages individual investment and personal economic gain. The country has managed to maintain their socialist laws while competing with the most aggressive economies in the world. Chinas situation has generated a number of controversy in that they pledge their allegiance to socialism while they exploit the advantages of capitalism. One of the features of China as a socialist state is individuals do not have the freedom to invest in any economy that they see fit. This situation immediately out rules the economy as a possible embracer of capitalism (Tselichtchev, 2012).

A close look at the progress of the country’s economy from the time of its inceptions begs to differ. China shows a high rate of growth that socialist countries do not record. The growth rate is brought about by the contribution of the entire population. This case is however different from the United States in that individuals work as a whole to produce a large amount of goods and services. The profit of the country is however distributed in a different way in that the majority of the profit does not go to one avenue. This does not take away from the fact that the country follows the same capitalist principle as their rivals (Parry, 2010).

One of the implications of capitalism is the marginalization of different social groups due to the lack of equal distribution of economic resources. Capitalist states are notorious for recording a high rate of inequity. A capitalist society encourages its citizens to take on individual investments so as to make a profit. This system is positive due to the increase in motivation it relays to the economy. One of the disadvantages that capitalism enhances is the marginalization of the society. This results in the lack of equal distribution of resources and finances in the local communities. Despite China’s improvement in the lifestyle of it citizens, the country continues to record high rates of unemployment and poverty (Tselichtchev, 2012).

Relationship between the domestic and international social forces and the state

China continues to maintain its position as the fastest rising country in the global economy. The country has managed to get this reputation through the number of business investments that have undertaken over the years. China’s success did not occur overnight as presumed by a number of people. The country’s economy was first recognized in 1978 when it recorded an increase in its performance by 9%. This is a considerably large percentage in terms of economic growth. The country managed to sustain the rate of development increasing their status as an economic super power. The country has since gone as a far as produce more than half of the exports to the rest of the world. China continues to increase the variety of the goods they produce due to their emphasis on specialization. These statistics show that the country is practicing policies that are capitalist in nature (Parry, 2010).

China’s development of a capitalist economic system is defined by the amount of foreign investment that the country received annually. This ranks the country second to the united states in regard to amount of foreign investors they generate. China has managed to overtake Japan as the second highest developed economy. These dynamics threaten the position of the United States which has had the privileged of being the world’s largest economy presently (Tselichtchev, 2012).

The growth of the economy is reflective of the living standards of the citizens. One of the factors that enhanced this particular growth was the reforms introduced by Deng who was the minister of finance at the time. The reforms ensured that the country invested in several countries across the globe. This placed the country in a strategic position in that it formed a vast number of economic alliances and mergers globally. The country also managed to offer loans to a variety of countries willing to invest in the economy. This gave the country an upper hand when determining the international trading laws. Giving loans to their neighbors places the country at an advantage owing to the rate of interest that China stand to receive in the future. It is thus safe to conclude that China has shifted from their socialist way of life to a capitalist way of life (Gambe, 2000).

Social forces are factors that shape or influence the features in both local and international grounds. Social forces are inevitable in that they are interrelated and affect each in one way or another. There are different types of social forces that contribute to the shift of the social, economic and political state of a country. The analysis of the factor is thus ideal so as to provide a better understanding of the issue at hand (Hodgson, 2001).

Trade

Trade is the exchange of goods and services for money. Trade has been ongoing from the time man was in existence. The exchange of money has developed over the years due to the change in the cultures of concerned parties. The early forms of trade were simple owing to the interaction between communities in the same location. The introduction of factors such as globalization enhanced trade to a different level as a whole. Societies became accustomed to travelling across borders to acquire goods that they did not have at their disposal. This inclined communities to invest in facilities that promoted this type of trade. International trade is defined as the trade between two different economies. This form of trade is more complex due to the availability of different laws that prohibit the practice of certain ideologies, transactions and cultural norms. An advantage of international trade is the improvement of the quality of goods and services as a result of specialization of services (Kim & Lim, 2007).

China plays a vital role in international trade as discussed earlier. The country has in place a large population that has the ability to produce a large amount of commodities. Citizens in the country are highly skilled making the competition between the nationals stiff. Employers can thus hire a vast number of employees to provide adequate and efficient services. The countries relationship with the rest of the world is an essential aspect for the sustainability of its trade. China along with countries such as Russia, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea embrace the same system of governance. The country has over the years changed a number of their socialist policies placing it in a different category. The development of the country as a capitalist state is seen through the change in the international trade policies that limit its citizens to invest in other countries. Individuals presently have the ability to invest in their country of choice increasing the opportunities that come as a result. The government has introduced sanctions that assist investors during the trading process. This includes giving individuals or group’s loans so as to reduce the pressure that comes with investing (Parry, 2010).

Debt

Dept is defined as the accumulation of loans brought about by factors such as high interest rates, recurring losses and lack of production. Many countries are experiencing dept in a large scale due to the lack of planning by those in authority. The United States reports half of their population as subject to debt. Individuals who borrow beyond their means are thus said to be at risk of facing high levels of debt in the future. Some investments require a colossal amount of money to take place. This results in borrowing from available sources in exchange of payment with an interest. During the 1970s the Chinese government introduced policies that saw the government take on the responsibility as creditors to the rest of their neighbors (Tselichtchev, 2012).

China has accumulated a considerable amount of disposable income at this time making the country subject to lending. This strategy was introduced so as to form alliances with the countries that took loans. The countries in turn had to meet the requirements of payment which included paying the loan along with the accumulated interest. China acts as creditor to more than half of the countries in the globe currently. One of the economies that owe the country a large sum of money is the United States. Despite the United States position as the world’s largest economy, the country is highly reliant on China for various aspects of their development plans. This strategy has proved advantageous to the country due to the amount of money they have received from the increased interest rates. This however exposes China to bad debts which occur as a result of the inability of the debtor to complete the loan accumulated (Tselichtchev, 2012).

To address this issue, the country has come up with a plan that manages the debt crisis. The country has put in place avenues which assist companies in collecting their dept form international debtors. China can also use this situation to their merit by accumulating property from the country in question. This increases the assets of china in other countries making it a key figure in foreign investment. These factors do not display the socialist way of proving that china has advanced into a developing capitalist society (Hodgson, 2001).

Recession

Recession is marked by the depression, decline or collapse of an economy. The globe has experienced a significant amount of recessions owing to the mismanagement of the liquidity by the banks. The most recent recession was experience in 2008 as a result of the distribution of mortgage loans at unrealistically high interest rates. There is a close relationship between debt and recession. Bad debt gives rise to repossession of property and the loss of money by the banks. This results in a credit crunch that sees a large percentage of the population living in debt. The recession affected most of the leading economies owing to the immense investments they have undertaken. The cause of the recession is traced back to the banks in the United States. The banks opted to offer subdued loans that targeted middle and low income families. The interest rest of these loans were high leaving the home owners at the mercy of the banks. One of the options involved foreclosing a majority of the homes at half the price. The events did not only affect the United States but countries as far as Asia and Africa (Kim & Lim, 2007).

The recession was felt in all parts of the world making it a globalised event. China was one of the countries that were hit greatly by the recession. Most of their foreign investments were affected making the economy record a decrease in the economic growth rate. This example shows the influence of external social forces in the success of the China’s economy. Recession as a social force is a vital factor because of the number of countries that record losses. The low production of economies such as the United States, the UK and Australia affected China’s rate of distribution. The country continues to cut down on expenses due to the events that unfolded during the recession. The countries capitalist development is thus responsible for its involvement in some of the economic downtowns experienced (Kim & Lim, 2007).

Globalization

The analysis of globalization from a capitalist point of view acts as an introduction in regard to the role of globalization in a capitalist development. The look at globalization as social force paves way for a different point of view of China’s interaction with both local and foreign investors. China has broken the barriers that had linked its economies to an enclosed market. Despite this, the country maintains some of their socialist views to date. Chinas political system continues to dictate on most of the economic reforms and decisions the country sanctions. As stated earlier, China is a one party state and therefore operates in a different way from that of a democracy. The government dictates on all the local and international regulations when trading. China is referred to as a late capitalist developer due to their early adaptation of previous systems of government before developing capitalism. One of the factors that made this issue unavoidable is globalization. The enhancement of globalization influenced the country to get involved with other countries as opposed to investing in local premises alone. The country changed its approach in terms of the social and cultural interaction. This gave the citizens opportunities to exploit overseas markets. Globalization and capitalism go hand in hand in that one factor influences the other. Globalization in this case acts as a social force of the country’s political, social, economic and environmental aspects (Tselichtchev, 2012).

Contemporary issues that the country faces as a result

Contemporary issues arise from the existence of the social forces in relation to china’s development to a capitalist state. China’s embracing of the global market has served as an advantage which is seen in the increasing economic boom. China’s move from their communist form of government has generated the country a colossal amount of wealth making the move significant to the countries sustainability. Despite this positive feedback, the country has exposed its citizens to the disadvantage of an open market. These issues are inevitable making the country deal with the social, economic issues that other capitalist countries experience (Kim & Lim, 2007).

Marginalization/welfare

Open markets work against communist principles that gunner for the equal distribution of resources across the different communities and social classes. China still holds on to a portion of its socialist culture making the country debate on whether to fully convert to capitalism. The country remains the most populated in the world. This factor acts as a challenge to the government in that they have to cater for the needs of the entire society. The development of capitalism in the country has over the years worsened the situation due to the creation of the previously eradicated social classes. Venturing into a globalised market has created a class of powerful and influential individuals in all social aspects. This change of dynamics has created a new class of citizens who are highly reliant on the people in authority. The country thus records the rising rate of poverty, employment and lack of efficient welfare. The marginalization of a vast number of communities continues to spiral which as a result increases the vacuum between the rich and the poor. This is not about to change seeing as the government cannot overturn the capitalist policies that have led to the country’s economic success (Hodgson, 2001).

Pollution

Another contemporary issue that the country is experiencing is the depletion of the environment. The Chinese culture has high regard for the proper treatment of the environment. The introduction of a free market has affected the countries environment negatively as a result. China’s embracing of foreign investors has increased the rate of urbanization and industrialization. A majority of the locations and traditional settings have been renovated to suit the needs of the new investments. One of the factors responsible for the damage of the environment is the rising demand of fuel. The economy is one of the largest consumers of fuel after the United States. This has enhanced the use of nuclear energy which is unhealthy for the entire ecosystem. The nuclear debate continues to take central state with the capitalist countries refusing to reduce on manmade fuel. This is ironic owing to the fact that they are the most accountable for the depletion of the earth’s environment (Tselichtchev, 2012).

Uncertain future due to the shift from communism, to capitalism

China is caught between a rock and a hard place in regard to their stance in the systems of government. The government is divided in that some of the members do not support the communist ideologies. The other half however chooses to remain true to their traditional roots causing conflict between the two parties. The people who argue for the complete switch to capitalism state that the country is one of the most capitalized countries in the world. Ridding the country of its communist ways will move the country to the next stage of development. The proposers for communism maintain that the government should have control of a considerable number of national properties. Encouraging foreign investors limits the number of resources the country owns. Giving into the capitalist culture will change the political, social and economic way of life of the country as a whole (Hodgson, 2001).

Recommendations

As stated earlier, China has gained tremendously from their capitalist developments. The creation of the different industries has improved the status of the country as an industrial power. The country is therefore in a position to cater for the entire population present in the country. One of the ways that they can solve the issue of poverty and unemployment is by creating a welfare system that allows for the increase of the allocation of money to the impoverished states. The country is not ready to change their capitalist policies. The government should instead curb the rising poverty rates by maintaining some of the communist rules that seek to monitor the equity and distribution of resources (Tselichtchev, 2012).

The country has recognized the continued depletion of their environment due to the industrial activities. This is an essential step towards the improving the ecological situation faced presently. The government should consider the use of natural resources so as to limit the building of nuclear plants. The demand of fuel continues to rise by the hour owing to the increased rate of development, industrialization and technology. These social issues are unavoidable and are here to stay. The country should embrace the green way of life and business which constitutes monitoring the way the industries and families consume their fuel. This should however start from the government who come up with environmental policies (Tselichtchev, 2012).

It is not clear whether the country will make the next step towards capitalism. The government should ensure that they maximize on the merits that come with both capitalism and communism vice versa. This will improve the situation of the country until they political authorities come up with a system that works for the continued sustainability of the economy (Hodgson, 2001).

Conclusion

The China situation is one of the most complex in all aspects of their economic growth. The countries move from a communist culture to that of capitalism has changed the dynamics of the country’s political, social, economic and environmental factors. This is highly influenced by the social forces which are inevitable to any economy. The debate on whether China can sustain its economy through capitalism continues to prevail. It is left for the entire globe to observe the events that unfold due to the level of uncertainty that the country faces in the future.

CARCINOGENIC AFFECT OF GRILLED FOOD ON THE BODY

Abstract

Food grilling is one of the common practices that is adopted by a large number of the America population. Barbeque remains to be the favorite meals especially when on holidays or when parties celebrate their good times in the open. Grilling of food has been said to have elevated the levels of carcinogenic chemicals in food that include the heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). HCAs and PAHs are produced when foods are cooked at high temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The two compounds are said to be carcinogenic when they come into contact with the human cells as they increase the probability of mutations among the human cells. The intake of the HCAs and PAHs can be through ingestion of grilled food contain the carcinogenic content and as well as through inhalation especially for the person preparing the food. Regular cleaning of the grills as well as grilling food at low temperatures may help in reducing the level of HCAs and PAHs in the foods and therefore minimizes the chances of cancer attack.

IntroductionCarcinogen refers to any of the substances to which promotes carcinogenesis that is responsible for the formation of cancer (Grimmer, 2018)7. The ability of the carcinogen to cause cancer is due to its ability to damage the genome or the disruption of the cellular metabolic process. Several radioactive substances can be considered carcinogenic, but the carcinogenicity can be attributed to the radiation, for example, the alpha particles as well as the gamma rays that are emitted by the carcinogenic substances. The common examples of the non-radioactive carcinogenic substances that are taken into the body through inhalation include the tobacco smoke, asbestos, and some dioxins.

Cancer refers to any of the diseases to which the normal cells get damaged and therefore do not undergo programmed cell death as fast as they are expected through mitosis. The carcinogens are known to increase the risk of cancer, and this is achieved through the alteration of the metabolism or through damaging of the DNA directly in the cells, and this interferes with the biological processes and as well induces the uncontrolled, malignant division, that eventually leads to the formation of tumors. In the case of severe DNA damage, it leads to the programmed cell death, but if the programmed cell death pathway gets damaged, then the cell is unable to prevent itself from becoming a cancer cell.

Figure showing the cell cycle between a normal cell and a cancer cell

A large number of people worry that substances or sequential exposures into their environment may be liable for causing cancer. Cancer is caused by the changes in the cell’s DNA. The DNA is the genetic blueprint of the cell, whereas some of the changes in the cells can be inherited from the parents, most of them are induced through the ingestion or inhalation of chemicals into the body thereby affecting the cells negatively, resulting in mutation and other conditions such as uncontrolled activities such as cell growth. The induced factors are as well-known as the environmental factors, and they include a wide range of exposures. The exposures include; the lifestyle factors that include physical activity, tobacco uses as well as nutrition. Naturally occurring exposures include the ultraviolet light, infectious agent and random gas. Medical treatments are also another environmental cause for the cell changes with such treatments including chemotherapy as well as the drugs that suppress the immune system. Pollution, household as well as workplace exposures cannot be left behind among the environmental agents or factors that lead to alteration of the cell’s DNA. Some of these factors are behavioral and can be changed through the adoption of the required behaviors. Lifestyle factors such as nutrition is an individual factor, and this implies that it is controlled by the personal behaviors that may include dieting as well as the nature of cooking their food before consumption.

The substances and exposures that are known to cause cancer are the carcinogens, with some of them having no direct effect to the cell’s DNA but lead to cancer in other ways such as causing the cells to divide at a faster rate than for the normal cells and this increases the chances that the DNA alteration will occur. Carcinogens do not cause cancer in every case, all the time as the substances known to have carcinogen vary in the levels of their cancer-causing potential (Poirier, 2018)12. Some of the carcinogens may cause cancer after a prolonged period with high levels of exposure while others take a shorter time to develop. For any particular individual, the risk of cancer development depends on many factors that include how they are exposed to a carcinogen, their genetic makeup as well as the intensity of the exposure.

How carcinogen is determined by researchersTesting for carcinogenic properties on food substances has often proved to be difficult especially for cancer as it is unethical to test for substances by exposing the populations to it and seeing whether they contract cancer from the substance. Due to this, researchers and scientists have devised other ways to test for the carcinogen.

Laboratory studies

Most of the testing is done in the laboratory not only for the carcinogenic products but for a wide range of substances across the globe. Laboratories have therefore been an essential component in the testing process as scholars have been able to identify the causes, as well as the treatment of the various conditions that have for a long time, caused discomfort to the people. Scientists obtain much of their data regarding whether a substance is capable of causing cancer from the laboratory studies that are carried in the cell cultures and animals (Greenstein, 2016)6. As there are a large number of substances to be tested in the laboratory which are both natural and human-made, the scientists use the pre-existing knowledge about the chemical structures, the extent of human exposure, results from the other laboratory tests as well as other factors that are relevant in the selection for chemical testing. For example, the scientists can have the idea regarding whether a substance might cause a problem through a comparison to a similar chemical to which have been studied in the past.

Laboratory studies alone cannot predict that a substance can cause cancer in individuals all the time, virtually all the known human carcinogens to which have been previously tested to cause cancer as well cause cancer in the laboratory animals. In most of the cases, the carcinogens cause cancer in laboratory animals during testing, and consequently, they are found to cause cancer in humans (Grimmer, 2018)7. Most of the studies of potential carcinogens expose the laboratory animals to doses that are higher than those exposed to humans. The reason behind it is because the cancer risk can only be detected in a relatively small group of animals. It has not always been clear if the results from the laboratory animal studies will be the same as that of the human as they are normally exposed to the substances. For example, the effects that are seen in the laboratory studies with very high doses of the substances may not have the same effects when the doses are exposed at a lower concentration or the effect of a substance when it is inhaled may not necessarily be the same as when typically applied on the skin. The difference also exists in that the bodies of the laboratory animals as well that of humans may not always substances in the same way. For the safety reasons, it is presumed that the exposures to which are caused by cancer at the larger doses in animals may as well be responsible for causing cancer in people. It is not possible to know how the exposure dose might affect the risk, but it is reasonable for the public health purposes to assume that lowering the human dosage of exposure will be able to reduce the risk of attaining cancer.

Studies in peopleApart from the laboratory testing, human studies as well can be used in the testing of carcinogen in the bid to identify their presence, and this is done through the epidemiologic studies. The epidemiologic studies look at the human populations to determine the factors that might be responsible for and may be linked to the onset of cancer (Gillison et al. 2015)5. The epidemiologic studies as well also provide important information, although they have their limits as the humans do not live in a controlled environment making the epidemiologic studies to be hard to achieve. People get exposed to many substances at any of the given time, especially at their workplace. They also exposed through the food that they consume, and it is unlikely that they are aware of what they have consumed and as well their exposure may remain unnoted to them as they even don’t remember of all the exposures that they have passed through in their past activities. Cancer development is not a single day thing, and this implies that the onset of cancer takes decades between the exposure to carcinogen and the onset of cancer and therefore it can be very difficult to link any particular exposure to cancer.

Through a combination of data from both types of studies, that is the laboratory studies and human studies; the scientists try their best to make an educated assessment of a substance with the ability to trigger the onset of cancer in the body of the humans. When there is enough evidence which is conclusive, the substance can, therefore, be labeled as a carcinogen. In the instance that the evidence is not conclusive, there is a consideration for the substance to be named as a carcinogen, although at sometimes there is not enough evidence to be certain in either way.

Human mostly takes in carcinogen through foods that are contaminated with carcinogen. Grilled meat and maize are among the leading causes of carcinogen intake into the body (Bansal et al. 2015)1. Holidays and leisure times are always characterized by an increase in demand for grilled meat, and this means that a large number of people do engage in the consumption of this type of food. Grilled meat is delicious and can create a delicious summer meal. The main concern, however, arises in the method of preparation for the barbeque as it involves grilling the meat at high temperatures which can quickly turn the perfect meal into carcinogenic making it no longer safe for consumption.

What happens when meat is grilled?Grilling meat as said earlier involves exposing the meat to high temperatures making it carcinogenic. There are two types of chemical reactions that occur during the preparation of barbequed meat. The initial chemical reaction involves fat drippings from the meat, and this leads to the creation of smoke that contains the chemicals polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (Kamankesh et al. 2015)9. When the smoke produced surrounds the barbeque during the process of cooking, it gets to transfer the carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons onto the meat on the grill.

The second case, when the meat is grilled at high temperatures, above 300 degrees Fahrenheit and for a long period, some reactions occur in the food, and these reactions create heterocyclic amines (HCAs). The heterocyclic amines are mostly found in the meat that has been grilled or fried, and this is characterized by high-temperature cooking. Lower temperature cooking methods such as baking and boiling produce the least amount of heterocyclic amines. It is also significant for the individuals to remember that charcoal and gas grilling both expose the meat and other foods to high temperatures.

When any meat is cooked over the flames or at very high temperatures, the muscle proteins tend to react with the heat to form various compounds the HCAs (Sobral et al. 2018)15. The HCAs have been attributed to, cause the cellular DNA alterations that are associated with the development of certain types of cancer in the human body. According to studies, the consumption of these chemicals, that, is the HCAs and the PAHs that are found on grilled meat have been attributed to the increased risks of colon, breast, pancreatic, prostrate as well as gastric cancers, mostly if the meat gets to be thoroughly cooked through surface charring.

Figure 1: The formation of HCA compounds during grilling

The HCAs are formed when substances such as the amino acids, creatine, and sugars get to react at high temperatures, and this mostly occurs in meat cooked at high temperatures (Oz & Seyyar, 2016)11. The PAHs are found in the smoke of the open grills, and they are consequently dropped into the meat during the process of grilling. The PAHs can as well be formed during the other food preparation stages and processes, and also, they can as well be found in the cigarette smoke as well as the car exhaust fumes. The formation of the HCAs and the PAHs in the cooked meat tend to vary according to the type of meat that is being prepared, the duration and the period of cooking as well as the cooking method that is used. In an example, a barbeque that is well done and grilled will have higher concentrations of the HCAs. A cooking method that exposes the meat to smoke contribute to the meat being attacked by the PAHs, and this makes the meat contaminated.

There has been great evidence that has been associated with the high consumption of the charred meat on a regular basis with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer by 60 percent. The PAHs and the HCAs are capable of damaging the DNA only after they are metabolized by the specific enzymes that are found in the body through a process referred to as bio-activation. According to studies, the activity of the enzymes can vary from one person to another; the information may be relevant to the cancer risks associated with the exposure to the PAHs and HCAs compounds. Numerous epidemiologic studies have incorporated the use of detailed questionnaires to examine the participant’s meat consumption as well as their meat cooking methods to make an inference of the levels of the HCAs and the PAHs exposed to them during the consumption.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)The PAHs are developed in the case where substances get to be burned, for this case the grilling of meat to obtain a barbequed food. Grilled meat is sweet to consume and is more appealing to a large number of people due to the sweet aroma produced during the grilling process. The PAHs can also be found at the places where the coal-gasification sites had been previously located. It is attributed that breathing of the smoke or getting into contact with the contaminated soil from such sites exposes an individual to the PAHs. Some of the PAHs may be responsible for causing cancer and may affect the kidneys, eyes, as well as the liver and therefore the PAHs, are among the carcinogenic compounds in grilled meat that may have adverse effects to the human body.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are compounds induced to the food prepared through grilling. The PAHs are a group of chemicals occurring naturally in the coal, gasoline and crude oil. The compounds are as well present in products that are produced from the fossil fuels that include asphalt and creosote. In the instance where coal is converted to natural gas, the PAHs are released, and this explains why some of the coal-gasification sites tend to have elevated levels of the compound. The polycyclic aromatic carbons can as well be released into the air during the burning of fossil fuels, organic compounds, and garbage. The less efficient the burning process, the more PAHs tend to be produced. The PAHs are produced naturally through natural activities such as volcanoes as well as forest fires.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be found throughout the environment and this include in the air, water and the soil, they can persist in the environment for a longer period probably for months or years. There are hundreds of PAHs that do exist but the most common ones include: Acenaphthene Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, Anthracene Fluoranthene, Benzo(a)anthracene Fluorene, Benzo(a)pyrene Indo(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene Naphthalene, Benzo(k)fluoranthene Phenanthrene and Chrysene Pyrene (Henríquez-Hernández et al. 2017)8.

Mode of exposure to the PAHs

The air can at sometimes be contaminated by the PAHs, but the levels can vary depending on the area and region where the person is based. In the urban areas, the levels of the PAHs can be elevated to at least ten times greater than those in the rural areas. A person may be exposed to the PAHs in the soil near the hazardous areas such as the coal mines or areas to where woods have been burned. In the United States, low levels of the PAHs have been found in the drinking water supplies meaning that a large number of the populations are at the verge of being exposed to the PAHs chemicals.

At home, the PAHs can be found in tobacco smoke, fireplaces as well as from the smoke from the burning woods and stoves as well as some foods. Barbequing, charring or the smoking of food over the fire increases the levels of the PAHs in the food being prepared and this include activity such as grilling food like meat (Ledesma, Rendueles & Díaz, 2016)10. Other types of food such as roasted coffee, refined vegetable oil, vegetables, grains, and roasted peanuts may contain low levels of the PAHs, and therefore any food that has been passed or cooked under excessive heat especially roasting have a certain percentage of PAH in them.

Health effects of PAHs in the human body

PAH is a harmful chemical compound, and this means that it has a negative effect on the health of the person when taken along with other foods. During the process of grilling meat, it is inevitable that the PAHs are absent in the meat and any means to clean the grills will only reduce the levels of the PAHs in the meat. At any given point as long as the meat has been prepared through grilling, the PAHs has to be present. The frequent consumption of such barbequed meat implies that a person consumes PAHs in low concentration and this, therefore, might not be noted, however, more consumption over a long period implies that the levels of the PAHs continue to increase in the individual’s body. When ingested into the body at low concentrations, the effects of the PAHs might not be felt, but the more accumulation increases the chances of causing a tremendous impact into the body tissues of the victim. Higher concentrations of the PAHs in the body may be lethal, and this means that the chances of attaining a deadly condition like cancer are very high.

The health effects that are attributed to PAHs exposure mostly depends on the amount of PAHs that have entered the body, the period of exposure to the PAHs as well as the body’s response to the PAHs after ingestion or exposure. It should be noticed that a person can intake PAHs through smoke or through the consumption of the foods that are contaminated with the PAHs and this most specifically may be from the grilling of meat. Depending on the above reasons, the health effects of the PAHs can either be long term or short term, and this means that the lower the exposure or accumulation of the PAH into the body implies a short term effect while the higher the level of exposure and accumulation imply a long term effect and a higher risk of fatality.

Short term health effects of the PAHs

It is not clear of the ability of the PAHs to induce the short-term health effects to the individuals. However, the occupational exposures to high levels of the PAHs and other mixtures can result in various symptoms that can be said to be the short-term effects of PAHs consumption or exposure. The symptoms include eye irritation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting as well as confusion. Despite the manifestation of these symptoms, it is not yet known which of the specific PAHs compounds and mixtures is responsible for the causation of the symptoms. The mixtures of the PAHs are known to cause effects on the skin of animals and humans, and this includes the skin irritation and inflammation. Some of the compounds of the PAHs such as the anthracene, naphthalene, and benzo(a)pyrene are known to be skin irritants. Benzo(a)pyrene and anthracene have been reported to be skin sensitizers, for example, they are used to cause an allergic skin response in both humans and animals (Rengarajan et al. 2015)13. The short-term effects of the PAHs to the children are the same as to those of adults. However, the children with lower body weights compared to adults require a lower exposure less than that of adults for the same health effects to be effected onto them and this, therefore, depends on the ability of the body to fight against the mutagens as well as the surface area of the individual.

Long term health effects of the PAHsThe accumulation of the PAHs for a longer period may result in adverse health effects into the human body. Various health effects can be attributed from the prolonged exposure to the PAHs, and these may include: cataracts, skin damage, and photosensitization also known as sensitization to sunlight. Another long-term effect includes the kidney and liver damage aplastic anemia, a condition that effect on the bone cells in the bone marrow that produces the red blood cells. The repeated contact of the PAHs with the skin may lead to the induction of redness as well as skin inflammation. Most of the animals that have been exposed to some levels of the PAHs over longer periods during the laboratory studies have developed lung cancer from the inhalation, skin cancer that has resulted from the skin contact as well as stomach cancer that result from the ingestion of foods contaminated with the PAHs. According to the long-term studies that were conducted among the workers exposed to a mixture of the PAHs and other related workplace chemicals, there have been positive results that indicate an increased risk of the different types of cancer that include the risk of bladder, lung, gastrointestinal as well as skin cancer (Rengarajan et al. 2015)13. The studies, however, have as well reported asthma like symptoms, chronic bronchitis, lung abnormalities as well as reduced immune function. However, despite the causation of the above conditions, it is not clear from the studies as to whether it is the exposure to the PAHs to which was the cause as there were other potential cancer-causing agents during the period of exposure.

Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs)The heat during summer is a compelling weather condition that catches the attention of many people in the fields and during these times, barbequing is one of the best methods of preparing food. During the summer, millions of people not only the Americans fire up outdoor grills, especially during holidays. According to research, a large number of individuals who happens to own grills, use their grills all year round preparing the barbeque and that only 44 percent of the owners use the grills 1-2 times a week during the peak seasons. During the preparation, that is the grilling of meat either beef, chicken, fish or pork, some chemicals are produced, and these include the heterocyclic amines (HCAs, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), acrylamide as well as the advanced glycation end products to which are termed by researchers to being mutagenic. A mutagenic substance is that which is capable of causing a mutation or structural damage to the DNA of the cell. Besides, the chemicals produced can be associated with the development of cancer cells in the various organ tissues of the human body and therefore can be as well termed as being carcinogenic.

The heterocyclic amines are potent and mutagenic compounds that are developed through the use of cooking methods that use high temperatures such as barbequing or grilling over an open flame, and this is more common on foods such as meat, fish and poultry. The heterocyclic amines are created when the amino acids which are also the building blocks for the proteins, creatine that are the compounds found in meat, as well as the sugar molecules, get to react with each other at high temperatures. Due to their protein content, even the eggs when cooked at high temperatures may result in the production of the HCAs. Scholars and researchers have been able to isolate more than 17 compounds of different HCAs that are as a result of the grilling, pan frying, and boiling of meat, fish, and poultry. Among the 17 compounds, four of them have gained the attention of the researchers due to the carcinogenic characteristics. The HCAs chemical compounds include: 2-Amino-3-Methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ), 2-Amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (MeIQ), 2-Amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoxaline (MeIQx) and 2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo [4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) (Stavros et al. 2015)16.

Mode of exposure of the HCAs to humansSince most of these compounds of the HCAs are carcinogenic, it is important for the individuals to be aware of the risk of exposure to the compounds. The exposure to the HCAs in general and the IQ, MelQ, PhIp and the MelQx in specific is achieved through the consumption of meat that has been prepared on high temperatures (Garko, 2016)4. However, according to the scientific research, it has been detected that the HCAs can as well be harbored in the processed food-flavorings and the cigarette smoke. Regarding the occupation, the food handlers and especially those preparing the meat are prone to a high risk of being exposed to the HCAs through inhalation of the smoke and aerosolized particles during the preparation of the meat or foods that are rich in proteins.

According to the statistics, it has been reported that the estimated dietary exposure to the total HCAs to a person ranges from less than 1-17 ng/kg of the total weight of the individual in a day. Regarding the total concentration of the HCAs in cooked meat, the range is from less than one to about 500 ng/kg, though the concentrations of the HCAs are typically less than 100ng/g. In addition, the pan residues are deemed to always have high concentrations of the HCAs compared to the cooked meat, and therefore, when the preparing gravy from the meat drippings and grease, it is always essential to be aware that the gravy will contain huge amounts or high concentrations of the HCAs due to the residues in the pan. The cooks can be predisposed to relatively high amounts of HCAs through the inhalation the smoke containing aerosolized particles that are generated in the process of preparing meat.

Carcinogenicity of the HCAsIn general, the HCAs are considered to be potent and mutagenic compounds when they are exposed to humans. There have been numerous researches, and experiments that have been conducted with laboratory animals such as rats and mice and the results of the research have indicated that HCAs are cancer-causing chemicals. In an example, in both mice and rats, the oral administration of the MiIQ resulted in the development of tumors along the forestomach of the males and the cecum, liver, and colon in the females. In the female and male rats, the oral administration of the MeiQ resulted in cancerous tumors developing in the colon, oral cavity as well as in the zymbal glands.

The MeIQx’s carcinogenicity was demonstrated through its oral administration and the consequent the development of the cancerous tumors in the multiple tissue sites such as the lung tumors in the females, liver tumors in the males as well as the lymphoma and leukemia in male mice. In the rats, the formation of the liver and the zymbal gland tumors in both males and females, clitoral land tumors in the females as well as the skin tumors in males are evidence of the carcinogenicity of the HCAs compound. Both of the two types of the HCAs, PHIP, and IQ caused tumors in multiple tissues sites during an experiment with rats, mice, and monkeys (Fahrer & Kaina, 2017)3. Adding to the experimental animal models, the HCAs have been shown as being mutagenic agents through the use of the Ames test. According to the results, about 80-85 percent of the HCAs compounds that were identified as being mutagenic by the Ames test was proved to be carcinogenic in the animal tests. Besides, the potency of the Ames tested agents that were determined as being mutagenic correlated with the carcinogenic potency of the agents.

Health effects of the HCAs on the human body2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP)Among the environmental factors that are linked to carcinogenesis among the humans, eating habits that are mostly characterized by the diet is a major determinant especially the consumption of meat. When fish and other meat is being cooked, some mutagenic compounds get produced, and these are the HCAs; according to research, the HCAs have been shown to be carcinogenic through bioassays in rodents. Among the most abundant of the HCAs, compounds are the 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP). The PhIP has been shown to induce tumors of the colon, prostrate as well as the breast of the animal models (David et al. 2018)2. The results that the PhIP can induce cancer among the three tissues sites where the tumors occurred with the high incidence being in the western part of the globe. The presence of the PhIP in their diet that is rich in cooked meat make an inference that the compound is capable of posing a significant threat to the people’s health. In support of the carcinogenic evidence of the PhIP in the animals, the PhIP-DNA adducts have as well been detected in the human prostate, colon and breast tissues. Whereas a number of the epidemiologic studies have crucial reports that that indicate the associations between the intake of the red meat, PhIP intake and the consequent development of the breast, colon and the prostate cancer. Generally, it has been acknowledged that the carcinogenic potential of the HCAs compound, PhIP is initiated with the development of the PhIP-DNA adducts that has the eventual results of mutation (David et al. 2018)2. The mechanism of PhIP to causing mutation involves the primary CYP1A2-mediated oxidation to the N-hydroxy derivative that is then followed by esterification that results in an unstable product that is responsible for the generation of nitrenium ions which attacks and

The balance sheet and income statements are used in financial accounting because they are regarded as the most important financial statements. The Balance sheet lists assets and liabilities of the organization in a given financial period or fiscal year. An income statement was also known as Profit and loss statement and it’s a report for income and expenses over a specific period of time maybe quartile year.

In regard to performance an income statement shows how a company has performed by listing sales and expenses and the resulting profit or loss. A balance sheet summarizes the company’s assets liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time to analyze how a company pays for things (Weygandt, Kieso, 2008). Income statements report operating results such as, sales and expenses. This allows investors to evaluate company’s performance and gives a prospect on the way forward. The balance sheet on the other hand presents the strengths of a company which enables investors to factually calculate days of working capital. Balance sheets can also identify trends of how net profit is used, receivables and the payables.

A marketing manager should incorporate both the income statement and the balance sheet as they correlate. An income statement can be used for a specific time period to account for the debit and credit between balance sheet at the beginning and end of period as accounting is a double entry system. Although it would be better to use a balance sheet as an income report may be subject to biasness as per the income received .The balance sheet is efficient because it accounts for cash inventory and property on the asset side while accounts payable or long-term debt is accounted on the liability side. (Eisen, 2007).The main difference is that income statements describe the current year’s performance while balance sheet describes the overall position of the company right from the starting year of business to current year and provides information about all assets and liabilities applied in the business.

Al Capone during the Great Depression

Al Capone was one of the most notorious individuals within the United States who was a master of playing around the law and not getting caught. His criminal activities are recorded from 1919 to 1931, and this was the period of the great depression. Therefore, to some extent, he took advantage of this period to engage in criminal activities and earn a lot of money and other benefits he never deserved. Al Capone’s nickname was Scarface, a name he got at the Harvard Inn and later made valid by his brother, who slashed him across the face, making a permanent mark; thus, he was referred to as Scarface. Even though he was involved in many criminal activities, people loved him, which was contrary to the usual social behavior towards a criminal. This paper discusses the life of al Capone concerning crime, the great depression, and the love he got from the public, which is often deemed inappropriate.

Firstly the great depression affected the United States of America in considerable ways. It is referred to as the great depression since that was the only time the global GDP fell by 15%. It began on October 29, 1999, with the black Tuesday whereby the United States stock markets crashed, and this became world news. The great depression had devastating effects on both individuals and the government. Therefore, it can be deduced that the effects the great depression had on individuals and the general society provided an excellent opportunity for people like al Capone to come up and go on with their activities in an almost unnoticeable manner. This was because the government was fully occupied trying to find ways to bring up the sinking economy. It can also be attributed to the financial systems damage that al Capone never used a bank but used cash to avoid being tracked down in all his dealings.

Al Capone was born in 1899 in Brooklyn by his parents, who were both immigrants in the search for a better life. From the background of Capone, there was not a single indication that he could become a criminal since his background was impoverished and his parents lived a simple immigrant’s life. He studied at Brooklyn elementary school, and when a teacher disciplined him, he hit back then the principal caned him, and from that time on, he never went back to school. He met Johnny Torrio in Brooklyn, and they developed a relationship such that even after Torrio left Brooklyn, they still communicated. Torrio had been running a gambling operation, and he introduced Capone to a gangster named Frankie Yale. This was the beginning of Capone’s illegal business and criminal activities.

Capone married at the age of 19, and in the desire to be better, he moved t Baltimore with his wife and kid, where he was involved in the gambling and prostitution business. During this time, he was arrested. However, Torrio helped him to get out. He was also involved in political victimization since the person who wanted to be elected was to develop strict laws against them, and he wanted a person who would favor them. In 1924, even some people were shot and killed in the process of trying to convince them to vote for a specific person.

Even though Capone was doing illegal business, he was very generous, and the public liked him, primarily because of this. He was considered to work on the side of the people, and therefore he was loved, and the government could not easily convict him of a crime due to his lack of a trial in terms of financial expenditure.

In conclusion, even though Capone was doing illegal and unlawful, he was loved due to his relations with the public, which included generosity and the art of being charming. However, later he was convicted for 11 years because of tax evasion; he remains a very significant and complex figure among the Americans.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular disease is a universal term for various types of heart conditions. These conditions may develop concurrently or lead to other diseases or conditions under this group. Cardiovascular diseases include conditions that affect the heart and vascular. Conditions that affect the heart included but are not limited to:

Angina is a pain felt in the chest as a result of reduced blood flow into the heart.

Arrhythmia is the disorganized beating of the heart or an irregular heartbeat.

Congenital heart disease is a problematic heart function developed from birth.

Coronary artery disease is a disorder that upsets the arteries that transport blood and feed oxygen to the heart muscles.

A heart attack is an abrupt obstruction of blood flowing to the heart.

Heart failure is a disorder where the heart is unable to contract or relax routinely.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a type of heart failure caused by the thickening of heart muscles leading to electrical instability

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a situation where the heart gets larger undermining its ability to pump blood properly.

Vascular illnesses are those that affect vessels around the heart and all body parts. They include:

Peripheral artery disease is the thinning of arteries decreasing the flow of blood to the limbs.

Renal artery disease

An aneurysm is the formation of plaques on the walls of vessels, making them narrow and limiting the flow of blood.

peripheral venous disease

ischemic stroke, which happens when vessels carry a clot to the head resulting in brain damage.

venous blood clots

blood clotting disorders

Buerger’s disease

Raynaud’s disease

Causes

Atherosclerosis is the most common reason for cardiovascular diseases (Felman, 2019). It is the accumulation of fatty plaques in arteries, which makes the artery thick and stiff around the walls inhibiting blood flow to tissues and organs in general. Diabetes, health conditions caused by viruses, myocarditis, or congenital heart problems can cause damage to the circulatory system. Congenital heart disease develops before birth in most cases and results from genes, medication, and medical conditions. The structure of the heart can also change as an individual grows old causing heart defects. The causes of cardiomyopathy are not well known. The various types of cardiomyopathy may result from damage to the heart, infections, medication, and toxins.

Risk factors

Risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease include:

Age. The risk of damage to the heart, thick or weakened heart muscles, and narrowed vessels increase with age.

Sex. Men are more susceptible to heart diseases, with women facing more risk after menopause.

Family history. Several heart conditions are hereditary. If a parent or a sibling develops a coronary artery disease at an early age, 55 and 65 years for males and females, respectively, there is a higher risk of developing it as an offspring or a sibling (American Diabetes Association, 2016).

Obesity

Smoking. Nicotine tar contracts blood vessels, and the carbon monoxide in the smoke damages the inner lining making as a smoker more vulnerable to atherosclerosis. Smokers experience more heart attacks than non-smokers.

Some chemotherapy medication and radiation therapy increase the risk of heart problems.

Physical inactivity

Unchecked diet. A diet with too much salt, fat, cholesterol, and sugar can increase the chances of developing heart disease.

Stress

Poor hygiene. Poor hygiene increases the chances of heart infections. Poor dental hygiene is another risk factor.

Diabetes

Prevention

Most cardiovascular diseases are preventable through various practices as listed below:

Avoiding tobacco and alcohol

Eating fresh produce

Eating meals with less salt, sugar, and saturated fat.

Leading a non-sedentary lifestyle

Symptoms

The symptoms are dependent on the condition and vary accordingly. Common symptoms may include:

Pressure on the chest or chest pains.

Pain or uneasiness on the back, arms, jaw, left shoulder, or elbows.

Fatigue

Nausea

Shortness of breath

Dizziness

Cold sweats

Diet Recommendations

Eat the various nutritious foods from every food group. Eating plenty of foods does not mean the body is getting the nutrients it needs for normal functions and keep healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have fewer calories, which helps with weight control, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

An overall healthy diet emphasizes:

An assortment of fresh produce, fruit, and vegetables

Dairy products with low-fat content

Non-tropical vegetable oils

Whole grains

Skinless white meat (poultry and fish)

Nuts and legumes

Meals should have limited sweetened beverages, trans fats, sodium, fats, and red meat. When eating red meat on occasion, make sure to choose the leanest cut offered. One can also adopt the DASH eating plan (The American Heart Association, 2017). It is also essential to mind food with fewer nutrients.

Do not add sauces, salts, or sugars to fresh, canned or frozen produce. These fruits and vegetables should replace high-calorie foods. Grain servings should contain whole grains rich in fiber. Eat a variety of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids at least two times each week (Manson et al. 2019). Reduce sweet and sweetened beverages intake and drink alcohol moderately. Avoid tobacco.

Accounts Payable Management and its Impact on Profitability

Accounts Payable Management and its Impact on Profitability

The golden rule of balance sheet demands that the sum total of liabilities and shareholder’s equity of a company must be equal to the assets of that company. Despite this statement appearing to be obvious, most firms make very big errors whenever their balance sheet doesn’t balance properly. This leads to serious problems with financial projections. Accounts payable are what a company usually owes its vendors or suppliers from which it purchases its supplies and inventory. Accounts payable is often located on a company’s balance sheet. They are the current liability of any company and are clearly outlined on the right hands side of the company’s balance sheet. They are usually paid to the supplier within a maximum duration of one year.

Just like any liability or asset, a company’s unpaid bills can have a very significant impact on the overall profitability either negatively or positively. Accounts payable affect the profitability of a company through two major ways: company’s cash flow and the company’s relationship with its vendors or suppliers. Accounts payable can impact quite positively on a company’s profitability if one has the best practice in managing accounts payables. First, the company will be able to settle its bills on time. This appears to be a rather simple practice though a company that seldom practices it, never has anything going on well with it.

Secondly, if a company pays its bills on time, it is able to elicit trust between itself and its suppliers, irrespective of the number of suppliers it has. By building on the trust between the two parties, the suppliers will be able to provide it with inventory, other suppliers and even offer it better discount rates that will impact significantly on the overall profits of the company. Lastly, best practice in accounts payable management is to strive to facilitate processing of the accounts that should be payable with the least number of staff and amount of paper work. Smoothing out the company’s accounts personnel on payroll increases the profits of the company by a large margin by simply decreasing time spent on paper work and personnel. I strongly hold the view that slowing down payments of suppliers in order to increase the company’s bank balance is unethical and unprofessional. It can lead to deterioration of the existing cordial relationship and trust between the company and its suppliers and this may adversely affect the company future.
