Prompt #1

I am a very particular kind of person driven by hard work and the need to care for other people. I currently work in El Faro Restaurant where I have now worked for a couple of years. My dedication to my work and the need to better myself has improved my persistence in life. I have grown from one level to another in the Restaurant, and currently, I serve as the cashier. I remember joining the Restaurant, I was very shy and did not know how to approach and serve my clients. With time, I had learned all that pertains to a restaurant, including cleaning, cooking, and customer service. The supervisor was very pleased with my work as he saw my dedication to learning and improving my people skills. Later on, I was asked to serve as a cashier. The promotion was a surprise as many of my colleges were far more qualified for the job. I believe that being a cashier needs dedication as well as integrity. I am a trustworthy person who is keen on details, and I balance my books very well for a person who has not studied finance.

Working as a cashier involves more than just crunching figures and giving bills. It also entails managing the hotel’s finances; the Restaurant owner is pleased with my work. Over a period of one year, I have been able to reduce the costs associated with the Restaurant and improved the income due to a reduction in theft and inconsistency in book keeping. I am very proud of this achievement as it will help me in other areas of my life and later in my studies.

Working in the Restaurant has allowed me to serve others as well as improve my self-esteem. I have been able to cultivate my strengths and work on my weaknesses while interacting with my customers. I take pleasure in what I do and dedicate myself wholly to the work entrusted to me. I am very passionate about improving myself as well as the people and community around me.

The customers are satisfied with the work we do as a team, which has led to a high customer retention level in the Restaurant. Working through the complaints that are constantly presented to me in the work environment has improved my problem-solving skills. In an environment where people are in constant interaction, there will always be disputes and complaints. The key is to listen when complaints are being presented without interruption—showing empathy for the wrong that has been done and establishing a settling ground for both of the affected. I have mastered this art and constantly am being referred to as the peacemaker by my colleges.

Over the years, I have come to appreciate the little things in life as they build up to create such wonderful outcomes. I believe that the journey for me has just started, and with time, I will be able to offer more to my community. I aspire to go back to school and give my best in the learning process. For my community as well as myself, I believe I can create a better world.

I am an ambitious and self-taught student in the field of life. I love bringing happiness in the lives of the people around me, which is a sum of my most treasured characteristic. In executing my duties at the Restaurant, I have discovered that community involvement is very important to me. I love being around people, and associating with them makes me feel appreciated as well as impactful. Life must have a meaning, and I have derived my meaning in life by associating with others. Helping the needy and being there when people need my assistance. Working in a restaurant has helped me in cultivating these important skills. I have grown and understood the society around me despite the many challenges that I face as a Mexican in a foreign land.
