Chronological age is the number of years that a person has lived on earth whereas biological age is the age which a person appears to be. Biological age is at times referred to as physiological age and many factors are taken into consideration which includes exercise, diet as well as sleeping habits. The most common change that occurs during middle adulthood is the middle age spread. This is the weight gain that occurs in the middle adulthood. This has been attributed to change in hormones and reduced metabolism thugs we lose less fat. Another change is ability and mobility becomes a problem. The loss of cortical bones is also associated with decline of hormones, in women its hormone estrogen. Generally, the body’s immune system becomes weakened with age and due to lack of physical activity the body is exposed to several chronic illnesses. The fat build up may also result in heart diseases such as stroke and heart failure. Skin will also dry out, and wrinkles start forming. Especially in sensitive areas such as the facial area. Gay hair is another biomarker of aging and is due to production of less melanin by the hair follicles. The pros of physical aging include wisdom because of life experiences, people especially the young give you much more respect and one can make better decisions on life. The cons include decreased ability to carry out tasks due to decline in strength, susceptibility to diseases such as heart diseases and diabetes.

My Life And Philosophy

My Life And Philosophy

I truly believe that philosophy is constructed instead of being discovered. When I found out that I had to write an entire essay on the philosophy of my life, it was evident to me that it was going to be a challenge. There have been times when I wished that I was so much older, and everybody had always told me to slow down and take things one day at a time. I know am only seventeen, but as high school has passed by so quickly, I have realized to slow down and to stop speeding through life and make it the best I can. It seems like everybody is always in such a big rush to get to where they are going. I know I only live once, so why not enjoy it by living life to its fullest and focusing on the task at hand. Life to me is a lot like driving with your headlights on, you can’t see that far away but eventually you’ll reach your destination. We don’t know what the future holds and of course, we are all very anxious to find out.

On the road of life there are obstacles and with those obstacles come risks we must take. I understand that life is hard sometimes and focusing on goals is an absolute must. Staying focused, making good choices and common sense play immense roles in our everyday decisions. With that said, is how I try to live my life no matter what is thrown at me, I just allow a little breathing room. Life is what we make it, always has been and always will be. Accomplishing tough obstacles that come my way by judging the situation and making good choices is my philosophy on life. Just like having potholes in the road, many things represent the misfortunes in life. I love taking risks especially when they pay off in the end because that’s what allows me get closer to my dreams.

If I sat back and isolated myself from what’s really out there, I would be holding myself back from so many possible experiences. Experience is also something that allows you to live your life to the fullest, and protects you from making the same mistake twice.

Patience is something everybody must have in driving and even more in life. To me patience is one of the most admirable qualities a person can possess. Not only does it make them a stronger person, but it helps them with life choices and the hard situations that come. Without patience, any given person would be rushing through life which would result in not allowing themselves to see the little things that matter. That’s the best way to miss out on so many opportunities that may arise. Patience can reduce accidents or in other words, for example problems in life. Sometimes all it takes is time for intricate situations to roll over and relieve ones mind. It’s important to know your surroundings and by rushing you can’t possibly do that. Remembering to pay attention will help you out in the long run. Not only will it help on the road but more along the lines of life in general. It can help you with future job opportunities, future relationships, but most importantly it can help you with the way you decide to live your life.

Driving has its own multicultural society of its own, just like the real world. All drivers discriminate and stereotype at one point or another. If you think about

it, the road actually can be related to a multicultural society in many ways for example; “Filipinos can’t drive” or “Oh, what a nice car; it’s probably stolen, look at the driver”. All of those stereotypes have been said, not only by fellow drivers but police officers as well. A lot of officers use stereotypes to single out an individual. As for instance, you have to watch out for cops, there are good cops and there are bad cops. For cops, it is their job to stereotype against people especially on the road. Cops judge people by their race, color, physical appearance and even the type of vehicle they are driving. Sometimes that can be an excellent factor when searching for a specific variety of criminals. In another way, it can cause a lot of confusion with subjects that might fit a description or stereotype, but really have no relation to the crime at all. Maybe you happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The police are a major obstacle on the road; always have been and always will be. You just have to keep in mind your objective is to stay focused and if you’re not doing anything immoral there will be nothing to worry about.

Accomplishing tough obstacles is something that I have allowed myself to be good at. I’m able to read a situation that comes my way and without jumping to conclusion, I’m able to make an intelligent assumption that will enable me to move forward in a positive manner. To me living life at a pace and not speeding through it seems like the right way for me to live my life. Being independent isn’t always about doing things on your own without the need of guidance. It is also about making educated decisions that come from within. Being able to see your future without needing someone to spell it out for you is a strong quality that I hope to possess. In my short lifetime I have learned to take charge and to face problems instead of avoiding them. Not only does being independent help me with my problems, but it has helped me grow as an individual. I look at every day as a lesson no matter what is going on. As I get older I see more of the bigger picture rather than believing what I want and my philosophy gets stronger with that.

When I was younger I used to act like something I wasn’t. In Nellie Wong’s poem “WHEN I WAS GROWING UP” she talks about how she longed to be white in many ways; my situation is a little similar. Especially since I am bi racial I’ve felt like I’ve had to “empress” certain people to fit in. It was until I started growing up that I realized that just wasn’t me. I don’t have to change myself for anybody and my real friends will understand that and love me for who I am. To this day I am very proud of who I have become and how I’ve gotten to where I am today. I am glad to be different from others and content with my culture. I am sure that is not something that most people can say. Being bi racial has taught me to appreciate diversity and kept me interested in learning about other cultures.

In conclusion life is a lot like driving, it is what you make of it; if you turn your life into a big rush you’ll miss it before it even starts and end up living in regret later. Patience, determination and independence are all good qualities you should possess if you want to live your life in a successful manner. If stress plays a big part in your life it might cause you to want to quit at something you might end up being great at. You can’t allow yourself to focus of the negativity of life, because it will only end up hurting you in the end.

My Life Before the Pandemic

I remember that a week before the pandemic started, I had come out of an interview; they had accepted me to do my Internship at the New York-Presbyterian; I was very excited because I was about to graduate in my Major which is Human Services. My life had been super interesting because I studied and worked at the Bronx Community College, and above all, I was very active. I was in the gym and I had an almost perfect social life. Wonderful people surrounded me; I had so many plans for my graduation. I was planning for trips I wanted to go and they included trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic to celebrate my graduation. I had many dreams, goals and trips that never happened.

I am crying writing this. I remember when the pandemic entered, it was as if I was in a horror movie; the news every day was negative. They presented thousands of people who lost families; I was fortunate that in my family, no one died. I had a lot of panic about going out to the streets. I remember that my family and I had to line up at the supermarket to buy items. We did not accept visitors; I began to go into a severe depression and I did not want to go through it because it was unfortunate and desperate; I loved the life I had before the pandemic.

Social isolation during the pandemic (COVID 19) has affected many people. Social isolation has negatively impacted many people in the last 18 months. This virus has caused many problems such as anxiety, family separation, unemployment, and depression. Many remember watching the news on how to overcome these problems. It was a Sunday, May 17th; I heard Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on the news talk about how “The crisis (COVID-19) can be a mental health crisis.”

During the pandemic (COVID 19), I remember that anxiety has manifested itself in different ways, both physically and emotionally. One of them is the concern about protecting yourself from the virus and the risks. Some people reacted in a paranoid way with great panic, intense and excessive worries and fears as well as being constantly aware or frequently worried about the situation of facing death in the blink of an eye. Anxiety in other people can become intense and was portrayed as a panic attack. For example, I felt so mentally weak that I couldn’t control my worries in my case. Also, I couldn’t even fall asleep. As a result, it made me feel so stressed that the news made me worse; that is, very worried and sad.

I went through a severe depression. I called my doctor. She told me that one of the best solutions to deal with anxiety in this challenging time with the virus is to avoid watching the news. This habit of watching the world to find out how a country or the world is going through regarding this virus was not an excellent remedy to cure anxiety as many people did it. On the other hand, others say that the best way to control your stress is by praying all day and getting more sleep, or going to the park to exercise following the rules of social distancing. The media is the first to spread anxiety throughout the country. US citizens were at home just watching TV. This large amount of time on television was being taken advantage of by disseminating statistics of how many people die from Covid19 every day.

The news is a source of anxiety and a problem for many people. This is because a lot of people try to navigate into bringing their lives together, and the news talks about how the world is worried about where covid 19 will take the world to (Gao et al, 2020). It is a problematic situation since many people during the covid 19 got depressed. Television and other media have been a great source of anxiety, and many other issues related to them have affected people during the coronavirus period. Just like I got stressed and depressed, many other people experienced the same, and it has been a great source of problems.

The media should have done the best thing to instill hope into the people. Even though they are supposed to report the truth, they cannot tell how many people are dying every minute instead of helping people deal with the issues which are affecting them during this period of coronavirus; therefore, it is an important thing that the media should have come to help people dealing with stress and an abrupt change in the way of life. This is an important part of everyday life and the media should be more inclined towards helping the people instead of just reporting the news without focusing on the effects the news will have on its audience.

Chronology of white supremacy

White supremacy in the United States was legal before the civil war; however, the civil war acted to end the civil war as it brushed off most people’s minds. Yet, it was not finished in the whites’ minds in the southern end of America, and therefore it was a difficult time for the black people as some of the whites formed a group called the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). This was a group that was initially created in 1865, and it was made as a group of white supremacists who were against the blacks and what the blacks were about. It came about especially with the rise of blacks into freedom and power (Chalmers, 1987). Therefore herein, I will discuss how the southern people encouraged white supremacy and how it was hard for them to live without it even after being legally abolished after the civil war. The discussion will be a chronological one from the time this white supremacy began to the current events and how this has affected American society in an efficient negative manner.

During the period of the civil war, white supremacy did not exist. However, afterward, there came the KKK club, which was involved in lynchings for the black people and affected them greatly. The main reason for these lynchings was that the whites did not like how the republican government-supported and made the rights of the black people a priority in what was being done. Therefore the white supremacists, most of who were part of the KKK club, still believed black people did not matter, and thus, they could be trodden upon and made to remain backward in the society. In the book “What This Cruel War Was Over,” we see the civil war period and what it meant for the American culture. Therefore, upon this, white supremacy came from as the blacks got to be realized as human beings and given their rights after this war. However, those who still believed in white power did not want to give in to this (Manning, 2007).

After the civil war came the period between the 1870s and 1930s, this is when the KKK club had many members, and it was also the period when it was tough for black people to voice their issues. Therefore it is a period associated with many conflicts and issues to deal with them. One of the significant problems in white supremacy is the frequent dying and rising of the KKK club, whereby it has always come to the people in deferent forms and different leadership and other ways and manners of operation. Therefore they continued to fight the black population and its dominance and be given freedom till the 1930s when the great depression happened. Its membership went down in a very significant manner.

It was also during the period of 1870s to 1930s, there began the segregation of the black people geographically and through other means such as education whereby white kids could not attend the same school as black kids. However, violence was the most prevalent during this time, especially the lynchings.

In the 20th century, however, it was a time for change as more black people got to fight for their rights, and there were many structural changes in the way they were treated. Therefore, this was when people realized that they were complete human beings who deserved respect and dignity. This they demanded through different ways, even though demonstrations and talks as well as writings. The current society also includes people like Dylan roof, among others like Ida B. Wells. These two contrast to one another as Dylan is a serial killer who is a white supremacist, and Ida fights for black people’s rights.

Therefore, in conclusion, we can say that it was a time for a change from the time of the civil war to the time of the great depression and then up to today, whereby there have been changes. Even though the black population’s poor treatment has not been eliminated from American society, it is not as much as before.References

My Life Lesson

I wish I could say that I have liberated myself through this moment of my confusing myself and not knowing where my life is heading. It has been an uphill task trying to regain a solid ground, and the burden of hopelessness and feeling lost in my life is now magnified than ever. In the beginning, my life was full of fun as I grew up living with my parents and three siblings. However, the fun could not last for eternity as I felt helpless when my life was quickly drowning, and the reality was not within reach. It was a prerequisite to urgently find an easy way out of the situation, hoping for someone or something to influence me by offering a helping hand positively. It was the only I was to liberate myself out of that quagmire I had dug myself into.

The story kickstarted when I relocated from California, and I was not buying the fact that it was something my parents had to do, whatsoever. Emotionally, it was a big mess for me. I was so enraged, and I found my parents as the only scapegoats I could vent my anger on to, and in most of the cases, my points were vague. Ultimately, the issue amplified to be an even bigger mess. So, as I was starting making new friends, I contemplated drowning my sorrows to whatever I could think was “fun,” such as high drugs and alcohol. On school nights, I was mostly out until one or two, arranging on skiving classes and failing to attend school since, in my mind, I had better things to take care of but not schooling. Time lapsed, and I routinely failed to attend my days of school, and it immensely caused my grades to fall. I decided to drop out of school when I was in tenth grade. The decision seemed an easy one to buy as I could no longer wake up at four or five o’clock to prepare to go to school. Now, I could stay out and not feel guilty. Somewhat, I knew what was conspiring, and my life was now on a downhill slant, and there was little or nothing I could have done to save my life.

On the other side, my friends kept track of what I was doing, and they decided to emulate me, which in return led them to lose respect from their families, teachers, friends, not to mention everyone concerned. And so, we went on a field trip, and we cared less about losing our education or even jeopardizing the love from individuals and family who were concerned. To us, it was a great thing and sense freedom not to be controlled and enjoy life wildly until we became bankrupt and could no longer finance our adventurous life. To escape suffering, I had to find a full-time job that only lasted for a few months. I was sick of working hard. I could not stand any person authorizing and commanding me on what to do and how to do it all. Eventually, I was fired as I could frequently rebel such orders. Once more, I cared less. Out of my desperation, I started getting into a lot of mischiefs, not to mention troubling police officers in numerous encounters. I was finally arrested, and the authorities were ready to take me to the juvenile institute to try getting me back on the track. At that time, I had no information concerning how my friends were doing. I returned to our home and tried to contemplate about my lousy demeanor. I was trying hard to think if there was any chance that I could patch up my mistakes. Well, I could not just find the solution, and so, I said to myself, I should move on.

Weeks passed by while, and I was still at home, and schooling was perhaps the last thing I could think about. Indeed, I witnessed the kind of mess my friends were dragging themselves into, but I failed to understand why none of them saw what was happening to their lives too. Just like me, they were also ripping off. By then, I was disinterested with other people, and I wanted nothing to do with anyone. Perhaps, this was a crucial turning point of my life, and I needed time to myself. I was inspired to take my life back into normality. I went back to school for the second term of my tenth-grade year while I was also working on a part-time basis to finance my education and upkeep. I started to improve my grades gradually, though, still a little on edge, but ultimately, I knew they would be perfect. It did not take too long getting back into the swing of things and living normally both at school and outside. I can only pay tribute to myself for feeling the significant change and working so hard turn things around.

To summarize, I had to turn myself around since I knew my lifestyle was straying, not to mention the dangerous activities I actively took part in. More than anything, I needed time to discover myself, and as for now, I am waiting for my graduation. Out of that experience, I learned that it is not a nice thing always to be selfish as that can lead one into troubles. When I got involved in those dangerous acts, the only thing I cared about was me. People often fall into a sinister trap in the name of enjoying the freedom and having control of one’s life. As humans, it is a prerequisite to be governed by good moral values as negligence and ignorance can only lead people into serious problems. It is good to have life discipline and be mindful of other people. I could be far in terms of life wellness if only I had not wasted my precious time doing silly things.

My Life- Selam Girmay

Nobody knows the troubles and experiences I Selam Girmay has seen that comes to mind as I trek my way on in life. This is a difficult task since I am about to turn 15 years old. Who would think that at 15 I would have faced obstacles in my short existence here on earth? Every bump in the road I have faced has made me into the type of person I am and will become. The curves you are faced with in life I believe is what shapes and mould us into who we are and who we are to become. Every person is faced with things that shape their character more than once in their lifetime. Here is my short story of what has made me who I am as of today.

My obstacles started long before I even was created. I was just a twinkle of an idea. My parents had a difficult time conceiving and had to go through many procedures to get pregnant. But they finally did. However, the twist here was I was a twin. I was not identical. The next obstacle I faced was my brother and I did not share living in the belly of my mother very well. We were constantly fighting for more room. The drama all started with my arrival. We were born at 26 weeks. This was a surprise not only to my parents but also to me. It was my brother who was rushing his entrance into the world. I was clearly not ready. After my brother pushed he was out my parents fearing for our lives suggested they let me stay inside my mother. Just as my mom finished this statement the doctor yelled, “we got get him out”. My heart stopped beating. In a panic the doctored wanted my mom to push me out.  As the frantic start of my life was about to begin, I was hit with another curve. The umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck not one time but two.

I began my preschool at the age of 3, and I attended my first school in Wakame public school that is in Oklahoma. At this stage, I knew how to talk fluently, and I made a lot of friends in school as we engaged in games together. I became more massive and slightly taller as I ate more than I used to eat when I was young. I ate a lot of sugary meals that almost gave me tooth decay problem. I often had nightmares and dreams because of too many games during the day. My thoughts developed, and I had very mature reasoning that increased my curiosity to know why some things are the way they are. I was one of the brightest in our class, and I managed to pass well and proceed to other classes through a smooth transition. My learning process was based on influence. I majorly learned through hands-on experience as my teachers made us to count sticks and to draw pets and fruits to enable us to engage in actual writing. Through my teacher’s help, my proximal development increased as I found it easier to certain things on myself.

I developed a social understanding and built powerful bonds with my teachers just as I had created with my mother. My mother always told me that when I grow up, I will become a pilot and this is what I always told my teachers whenever they asked me about it. My conscience development increased as well, and I could easily differentiate between good and evil, and I could follow what my teachers ordered me to do including keeping quiet in class and doing class assignments.

Most of my milk teeth began falling off, and I ate a little bit more compared to how I used to eat before. My sleep patterns could change over and over because I had some assignments to do or because of watching movies that were my passion. I was able to distinguish fiction from reality, and I could deceive. I began developing my interest in children at this age. I grew art of spending most of my time helping, and caring for younger children. My mother used to send me to school with packed lunch and some snacks that I shared together with my close friends.

Adolescence was one of my most exciting stages as I can confess, it was my first time getting approached by a boy to be his girlfriend. I underwent this stage while in NWOSU in Alva Oklahoma. This stage was accompanied by me growing “more feminine,” and I became more intelligent as I knew almost everything. I reached the internet whenever I wanted and found answers to questions. My love for children increased, and I realized that I could play basketball and softball as I actively engaged in co-curriculum activities. At this stage, I was undergoing some conflicts that I did not know the appropriate ways to address them. Like in a situation where the boy approached me, I was confused and turned down his request as I believed it was the best thing to do. I was also filled with energy, and my libido levels were high.

I believe I am on the right track to achieve my dreams. I joined Redlands community college in El Reno Oklahoma where I pursue OSU currently. My cognitive mind has developed to the extent that I want to have baby care when I grow up. My love for children is at a higher bar, and even currently, I am a nanny to the child of my best friend. I have become more loving and caring, and I have come to understand that I cannot ignore boys forever. I love hanging out with boys more as compared to girls, even though I hated them at some point in my life. I quickly bond with children and all the children I nanny never cry for their mothers because to them “I am their mother.”

My life has had ups and downs ever since I was conceived. But the truth is, the more challenges I face, the more I become experienced in this world. I have learnt very many life lessons that I believe keep me on truck in this unpredictable world. I have learnt to keep my circle small in terms of friends. Throughout my life, I have become so choosy in determining who and who not should be my friend. In the past, I have been a victim of fake friends who back bite me and eavesdrop my conversations just to pass them on to other friends. I have also learnt the art of being humble in all situations. Whether one is rich or has power over others, humility is key. In this world I have seen those who were humiliated rise from grass to grace while those who were boastful in power lose them all. It therefore requires humililty in one’s operations because no body knows what tomorrow holds.

For sure, my life has not been a walk in the park and I have never given up on my dreams. I have managed to beat all the odds and I am currently studying my dream course. I believe I will go places and I am not stopping at anything. When the going gets tough, only the tough people get going and I believe I am one of the tough people.

China’s Transition from the Mao Era to Neoliberal Post-Mao Market Reforms

A lot has been said about China and how it transitioned from the Mao era to a neoliberal post-Mao market economy. Evidently, China begun the transition to a market economy from the late 1970s and in the early 1980s using a systematic approach to its major industries including the agricultural sector, opening up itself to foreign investments, and allowing entrepreneurs to conduct businesses. Previously, Mao had instituted a socialist education campaign and in 1966 formed a cultural revolution aimed at removing counter-revolutionary aspects in the Chinese society. In a movement that lasted 10 years, Mao saw China descend into class struggles, unprecedented elevation, and widespread destruction of various cultural artifacts unique to China. Mao’s agenda was to preserve communism in China through a process of purging capitalist remnants and all traditional aspects for the society. Due to the radicalness of the Mao era, its abrupt end and the transition to a neoliberal market reform afterwards is quite remarkable. Notably, the most compelling elements identifiable in China’s transition from the Mao era to neoliberal post-Mao market reforms include economics as a key to the country’s agenda, reduction of trade barriers, partially free market conditions, and the partial control and deregulation of the capital markets.

One of the key hallmarks of China’s transition from the Mao era to neoliberal post-Mao market reforms was the reversal of some policies made under the Mao era. Ping highlights how the movement from socialization to privatization of housing and other property markets in a reversed policymaking period reflected development ideology in the post-Mao period (6). As a mark of neoliberal politics and thinking, the housing sector was prioritized in the economy driven new approach that has seen China rise ever since to its current status. Today, expansive economy driven policies have seen urbanization account for a majority of China’s success in the post-Mao era (The Guardian 1). These developments are clear indications of a change in policy, one that would not have been possible in a nationalized Mao-era government. At present, powerful national identity and the strong sense of social purpose, as identified by Meisner (413), have been replaced by a country focused on an economy-driven political ideology, one that focuses on an overall welfare of its society through enabling entrepreneurs to drive the economy, removing barriers, and protecting domestic industries from external rivalry that is harmful. Yet, in the current post-Mao market reform era, the government has retained some level of control not evident in countries in the same economic development level as China.

While it is easy to focus only on the economic development of the country following the end of the Mao-driven reforms, it is important to also note that the post-Mao Chinese state play a vital role in governing and regulating people’s everyday life. Yu presents a case of how girls in the traditional Chinese society were forced to bind their feet in order to marry city elites, in a display of a Chinese culture that was very unequal, influenced largely by the Qing Dynasty in the early 20th century (1). Here, the influence of the reigning political class shows how policies affect the daily lives of the people in China. The post-Mao Chinese state has similar effects, albeit not as extreme as the foot-binding girls, but all the same noteworthy as the activities and policies held by the government controls and regulates how people interact with others through business, social, political, ideological, and in economic realms. At present, the post-Mao Chinese state offers freedom in relation to entrepreneurship, a phenomenon that has created jobs for various industries, improved the livelihood of the people, led to a rise in middle class status for a majority of the citizens, and seen an unprecedented wave of internal rural-urban migration. According to Miller (1), migration in China, titled Farm to City, is the story of the movement from the Mao era to a more liberal post-Mao period that has seen the lives of many people transformed. Urbanization, largely due to government interventions and policies, has led to better health care, overall improvement in education and its quality, opening up of more rural economies, and an overall better employment opportunity. While some problems exist, including unemployment and overpopulation in some cities, and the problem of a middle-class economy, the role of the post-Mao Chinese state has been one that has facilitated positive change to improve the everyday lives of the Chinese people. Therefore, through its efforts to improve the economy, the post-Mao Chinese state has enabled better outcomes for people, even where poverty, joblessness, increased migration, and a rising middle class exist.

The role that the government has played in governing and regulating the everyday lives of the Chinese people has been converted into rapid urbanization and the formation of a middle class xiaokang society. Ping is conscious of the problems and limitations that have risen in China due to the rapid urbanization of the country including changing patterns of human activities, social structural changes, and migration (7). In China today, rapid urbanization and building a middle-class xiaokang society have given rise to high population density especially in the cities, a lack of affordable housing, poverty, inadequate infrastructure in some regions of the country, pollution, crime, creation of slum dwellings especially for those migrating into the cities, and congestion. Meisner’s view of the concept of cultural revolution also points to a change in culture where Chinese people are gradually adopting capitalist ideologies in various critical sectors and in the act of building and maintain a vibrant middle-class society (293). Overall, the problems and limitations of China’s rapid urbanization and building a middle-class xiaokang society continue to expand as the nation rises in terms of economic development, social structures, and the adoption of more economy-driven political ideologies.

Due to the rapid urbanization and the rise of a budding middle-class society, China has progressed unevenly. This has meant that the nation has seen many people move from the countryside to the urban dwellings in the cities in search of greener pastures. The effect has meant that migrant workers have increased significantly, a condition that Miller has expressed to be a disaster in waiting as the country expands in ways that even the government has not been able to control (3). Migrant workers earn better than those that stay behind in farms and the twin processes of industrialization and urbanization mean that the national Chinese economy is able to provide jobs, even at minimum pay, for migrant workers (Miller 3). However, life for these workers is uncomfortable insecure, and unfair. While the economic rewards are better than the life in the countryside, mass migration means that housing and other critical components of human living are critically inadequate. The plight and struggles of the migrant workers will continue in the next several years as mass migration continues to happen amidst an expanding Chinese economy.

In conclusion, China’s transition from the Mao era to neoliberal post-Mao market reforms has meant rapid development, industrialization, and urbanization. While positive elements exist, including a better overall living condition and more wealth distribution in the country, it has also meant that a majority of people have been affected. While the government struggles to provide the best living conditions for all its citizenry, some elements cannot be controlled. For example, migration into the cities have meant poor conditions and insecurity for migrant workers. Nonetheless, the transition from the Mao era to neoliberal post-Mao market reforms has been a positive era for China, one that has seen it rise to global status.

China’s economy could shrink for the first time in decades because of the Coronavirus

China’s economy could shrink for the first time in decades because of the Coronavirus

By Laura He, CNN BusinessUpdated 1702 GMT (0102 HKT) March 4, 2020

Hong Kong (CNN Business) The novel coronavirus outbreak has been brutal for China and could plunge the country’s economy into its first contraction since the 1970s.

Economic activity sharply declined across the board in February as companies struggled to reopen for business or hire workers during a government-mandated shutdown, according to official and private surveys released in recent days.

Wednesday revealed shockingly lousy news for services in the world’s second-biggest economy. Chinese media group Caixin said its purchasing managers index for the sector plummeted to 26.5 last month from a reading of 51.8 the month before — the lowest figure recorded by the survey since it began in 2005. A reading below 50 indicates contraction rather than growth.

“China’s economy is in a very bad way indeed,” said Kit Juckes, a strategist at Societe Generale. That data — which mostly follows small and medium-sized companies — largely tracked with a government survey of primarily state-owned firms in the services sector released over the weekend. China’s factories also recorded their worst month on record in February, according to government and Caixin data, as companies face extended closures to contain the virus, or struggled to fill jobs because of travel restrictions.

“The virus outbreak has put the government into a difficult situation,” said Raymond Yeung, chief economist for Greater China at ANZ. “On one hand, the lockdown policy is the most effective way to contain virus spreading out. On the other hand, the health measures are hindering economic activity.”

The gloomy picture painted by the data is reinforced by evidence from coming from big companies. The world’s biggest brewer, ABInBev (BUD), said it had lost $285 million in revenue in January and February in China, while iPhone maker Foxconn (HNHPF) said Tuesday it didn’t expect production to return to normal until the end of March.

The fallout could be crippling for China’s economic growth this quarter. Macquarie Group chief China economist Larry Hu suggested that the country could be in for a historic economic decline.

The data “suggest that things are really bad and the government is willing to report that,” Hu wrote in a note after the official data was released at the weekend, adding that growth for the first quarter could come in well below estimates currently running at around 4% (down from 6% in the fourth quarter of 2019).

“It’s even possible that the government will report negative growth for [the first quarter], the first time since the end of Culture Revolution,” he added.

China’s economy contracted 1.6% in 1976, when Communist Party leader Mao Zedong’s death ended a decade-long period of social and political tumult in the country. Since then, China has boomed, growing at an average annual rate of 9.4% between 1978 and 2018 as it embarked on a series of economic reforms.

Hu wrote that China will likely enact more policy measures to help the economy, but added that it’s too early to expect a big stimulus package from Beijing.

UBS economists also suspect that China’s economy contracted in January and February, noting the poor PMI data in a Tuesday research note.

“The next two weeks will be critical to track the path of new confirmed cases of coronavirus and the pace of economic normalization,” wrote Ning Zhang and Tao Wang, economists for UBS.

Bad news for jobs

The recent data suggest that Beijing’s efforts to shore up employment this year are in jeopardy. China’s services sector represents about 360 million jobs and accounts for 46% of the labor market, making it the largest source of employment in the country.

Government authorities have been pushing hard to keep unemployment low, wary of the fallout that could happen otherwise. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said last month that officials are “closely watching the employment issue and will try to prevent massive layoffs.”

He also said stabilizing employment is the government’s primary task, and placed special emphasis on new graduates and migrant workers. China’s 290 million migrant workers are among those most exposed to a slump, since they often travel from rural areas to the cities to take on construction, manufacturing, or service jobs that would have been tough to find during last month’s widespread shutdowns.

Only 80 million migrant workers had returned to work by mid-February, according to the government.

In recent days, Beijing has also urged college students to join the army and ordered all public colleges to expand their advanced degree programs — efforts meant to reduce the number of job seekers.

China’s Economy Could Shrink For the First Time in Decades Because Of the Coronavirus

The article China’s Economy could shrink for the First Time in Decades Because Of the Coronavirus by Laura He discusses the economic recession state of China due to the spread of the Coronavirus. China is the second-largest economy in the world. China’s industrial progress could shrink progressively with the rampant spread of the Coronavirus leading to a drop in the stock market and higher unemployment rates. It is evident through the hardships Chinese firms face to reopen for business or hire workers after the government-mandated shut down in February as a measured policy to contain the virus. In micro-economics, an economic recession happens when the economy is on a downward spiral for two quarters in a row. A drop in revenues generated by large and medium-sized business organizations in China indicates that the Coronavirus has led to a contraction of China’s economy. Various global organizations operating in the country have reported a drop in their revenues where ABInBev (BUD) lost $285million, whereas Apple maker Foxconn expected its production to decline until the end of March (He, 2020). The country experienced its last economic contraction in the 1970s. It is a clear indication that the virus has seen most of the country’s economic activities shutting down due to extended measures to contain the virus or inability to fill in the job vacancies due to travel restrictions.

Coronavirus jeopardizes China’s combined efforts to contain unemployment. The virus has led to unstable employment levels in the country, with the government straining to create job vacancies for new graduates and migrant workers. During the shutdown, the workers face barriers of moving from rural to urban centers in search of construction, manufacturing, or service jobs. Out of the 290 million migrant workers, only 80 million have returned to work in February (He, 2020). The government has urged students to join the army as a measure to curb the unemployment rates in the country.

My Favorite Thing To Do

My favorite thing to do is to read and discover new information generally. Growing up, I always had an interest in reading novels. I am the kind of pupil who would sneak on novels and read them during class. Years down the line, nothing has changed. I still love books the same way I did years ago, only that my love for knowledge has only grown.

There is something about discovering new knowledge that tickles my fancy. My personality can be best described as calm and curious. I find joy in discovering new information for some reason. Reading books keeps my mind active and at ease. Whenever I start reading a new book, I feel happy and rejuvenated. Reading books gives me something to look forward to. I know that I have to find time to read the book if I want to see how the story ends. I am the kind that carries a book to read on my way to work. I do not mind reading two pages a day as long as I keep going. My thirst for stories is unexplainable. The same way I love reading stories is the same way I enjoy telling them. Not to toot my horn, but I am a good storyteller. I tell stories with a passion. Maybe that explains why I look forward to reading other people’s stories.

My favorite topics to read about include motivational books and books about financial freedom. I love these topics as they are of interest to me. Books about financial freedom and literacy have molded me a lot. I have learned about the saving culture, growing money, and investments. They have also taught me important life lessons such as working smart, living below my means, and paying myself first. Seeing that I struggle to manage my finances and make informed decisions, books on financial freedom has taught me invaluable lessons that I will hold onto for life. Motivational books have also helped me grow significantly as an individual and professionally. Currently, I read up to three books every month, which I intend to raise to five.
