Children of a Lesser God

In our daily lives, we interact with people who have minor or major problems in hearing. Despite their issue, these kinds of individuals are regarded as normal but treated in a special manner which will make them equal and easier to be understood by their fellow human beings. The film Children of a Lesser God is an example of movies which explain the lives of people living with these kinds of difficulties, and how people respect and socialize with them in the society (Davis, 46). Several scenes from the film illustrate how people with hearing impairment disregarded in the community and how these individuals fight to live normally with other people.

In the film, a deaf woman is seen being employed as a janitor, a post which most of the people expected it to be given to a person who has no such complications for easier control of the deaf students. Sarah, the same lady who gets employed as a janitor is termed as a former top student, a situation which no one believed that a student with such complication could end up becoming the best (Spirko, 18). She changes this culture of her people not upholding the rights of people of her condition as she is also seen running away from her own mother when she treats her completely different from other kids and women. Students and the staff are seen amazed by the fact the Sarah falls in love with James and the tow ends up well. Although her workmates do not talk to her, her students seem to be happy about her job thus this makes her happier to work at the school. It is true that people in her environment and community do not regard people with special needs as the same to them, whereby the mentality is totally changed by James who follows her Sarah even after the conflict and reconciles with her.

My Experience Studying In US

My Experience Studying In US

I got a scholarship to study in the US and I felt very excited about it. However I knew this would come as a challenge since it was to be my first time in the U.S and I did not know what to expect in the new country.I expected it to feel different since this was not my country and there were obviously different cultures and beliefs that the people had. This paper will therefore look at a situation where someone can feel different and how one can behave and handle such a situation.

When I arrived at the airport I felt I was given different treatment from other passengers not only from the staff in the airport but also from fellow passengers and people generally in the airport vicinity. I felt different because I was treated differently by people within the airport as compared to other passengers. This ranged from how the people spoke to me and even through their actions. It was a very awkward moment as the people there were looking at me in a funny way. Their eyes were full of suspicion and most of them avoided getting close to me. When I went to join a queue for collecting luggage almost everyone moved away apart from two young men and a lady who were Muslims and I suppose were also from my country. I chose to remain calm since I did not want any confrontations that would lead to a more uncomfortable situation. When I was taking my luggage the person who was handing them to me remarked “young man hope you do not have a bomb in there”. This came as a surprise to me since there and then I felt that anyone from the Middle East was stereotyped for being a terrorist or being associated with terrorism. This is a great problem of perception, this is among the many varied ways that westerners in the US and in my case that man misinterpret, is-characterize and stereotype people from the middle East. (Tristam, 2010 I told him that not everyone from the Middle East is a terrorist and he should not judge me based on that stereotype. as I walked from the airport to outside where I was to meet with the person who had been sent to puck m and take me to the school, everyone seemed to move away from me looking at my luggage suspiciously was not carrying a lot since I knew I would have to but new things there.

When I got outside the person to pick me had not yet arrived so I sat down next to a woman who was in the company of daughter. The girl was playing around and by mistake touched my bag; the woman quickly pulled her away screaming” don’t you know that these people do not like us”. It was quite uncomfortable since I did not expect such words fro her. Even if I am a stranger how I can possibly hate “them” and never knew them. This made me feel so bad since it was the least of what I expected from people in the US. The one to take me finally arrived and just pointed to the taxi that he was to drive me in, he never bothered to assist me in my luggage as I saw other passengers being assisted. This was shocking and when I got into the taxi he told me that he hoped that I had not carried any explosives from where I came from I told him that he could have searched me if those were his thoughts.

The whole experience at the airport was very uncomfortable, took various steps in dealing with the situation. First I accepted that the situation I was in was indeed uncomfortable and it was what I expected since it was my first time in the US and being from the middle east the people un the US and formed opinions of people from the middle east. I chose not to overreact and aggravate the situation any further, for instance I answered to the remarks made by the people there in a casual way so that I would not build any unnecessary tensions (WikiHow, 2012).

My experience with suicide

My experience with suicide is really scary. I know that we have all regretted things in the past and that is a normal feeling. But with suicide it’s different because people kill themselves to escape the pain they are in emotionally, which means it’s not something that you can just forget about or fix like most other problems. I have known someone who has threatened suicide before, and it was very hard for me because I wanted to take action but didn’t know what to do. An important part of suicide is letting other people know that they are in danger. An example of how this is done would be calling 911 or going to the emergency room. This right there can probably save someone’s life, but people don’t do this because they don’t want to make a big deal out of it and they just get mad at other people because they feel like they are intruding on their privacy but it’s actually life-saving information.

Various assessments that I would use to determine whether or not a client is suicidal are:

The BEDS Test: The Behaviors, Emotional States, and Thoughts Scale is a five-item scale designed to screen for signs of suicidal ideations and potentially self-harming behaviors.

The WHO Mental Health Interview Schedule: This instrument consists of eighteen probable signs of completed or attempted suicide across three subdomains:

1. Personal history (e.g., past attempts),

2. Mental state (e.g., psychiatric symptoms), and

3. Social factors (e.g., interpersonal relationships)

4. Beliefs about the future/death (e.g., hopelessness).

The treatment for suicidal thoughts tends to be dependent on a particular situation. In situations where someone is in the hospital and suicidal thoughts are present, the hospitals will often have a psychiatric evaluation. This is done by checking for suicidal thoughts, depression and also any other risk factors that would arise. This can be anything from previous episodes to drug use to family history of mental illness.

If a person has never been hospitalized before or had any previous episodes, they can be sent home with appropriate follow-up care depending on their risk factors and length of stay at the hospital. The follow up care could be visits with a counselor once every two weeks, going to outpatient therapy sessions or taking medication if needed.

“Some empirical studies have further suggested that certain religious and/or spiritual beliefs, practices, and/or affiliations may be protective against suicide” (Amato et al., 2017). This study found that among individuals who had a lifelong affiliation with an organized religion, the rate of suicide was lower than among those who were never affiliated with a religious organization. For me, faith has been an important factor for my own mental health and well-being. There is something about my beliefs that gives me hope when I am struggling and helps me see beyond what is going on in the present moment.

Children should not be spanked in order to discipline them for a negative behavior.

Agree or Disagree

Name of Student

Institution

I agree with the statement that children should not be spanked in order to discipline them for a negative behavior. There are, many reasons cited as to why you should not use spanking as a means of correcting a negative behavior. Spanking a child shows that “stronger” is right. This makes a child believes that whomever is bigger and stronger decides what is right and wrong. It also shows that violence solves problem. It has also been noted that spanking destroys self-esteem. Spanking also increases the likelihood of developing mental health symptoms later in life. It also causes a bad parent to child relationship and this causes mistrust. Besides, it makes a child afraid and when a child is afraid it becomes difficult for them to learn. It also causes a child to lie to avoid detection or even to avoid you. In short, it is not advisable to spank children in order to discipline them to correct a bad behavior bearing in mind the negative consequences it causes.

Spanking a child shows that “stronger” is right. Spanking is a means of physical punishment and it has been shown to send a very bad image to a child according to Olver. You use physical strength to spank a child and this means that you are punishing him or her because you are stronger. Children come to believe that older people who are stronger or bigger than them have the rights to punish them. Those children who were spanked when they grow and become stronger tend to abuse those people who are weaker than them. This has resulted in increase in abuse whereby young people physically abuse older and weaker people because they are stronger than them. Children believe that being stronger gives you the right to decide what is right and wrong. They abuse children who are younger than them just because they are stronger and they thinks that they are supposed to decide what is right and wrong for them.

Spanking gives an example that violence is a way of solving problems. When you spank a child, it’s a form of physical punishment and it portrays violence. Children think that their discipliners are being violent by spanking them. Punishing children is also seen as a form of bullying. Besides, other factors that contribute to aggressiveness in children such as mother’s depression, drug abuse, spousal abuse or even whether the mother considered abortion when pregnant, spanking remained the chief cause of violent behavior in children, (Cathrine, et al). This violence is even displayed to the younger children by the elder ones and even to the parents when these children grows up. Parents should learn other better ways of disciplining their children when they wrong them because spanking sends a wrong message to the children. Violence should never be shown as a way of solving problems because this is totally wrong and that is why am agreeing that spanking should never be used as a disciplinary measure to correct bad behavior.

Spanking has also been shown to interfere with self-esteem of a child. It becomes confusing when children are hit or spanked by the same people who are supposed to protect them. It makes children question themselves and asks what could be wrong with them.it makes children hate themselves because they believe that parents are supposed to protect them and not harm them and this lowers their self-esteem. Spanking has in the long run been associated with development of antisocial behavior and also causes low esteem as stated by Dr.Patrick.If you want your child to succeed in life, and then you should not do things that can lower her self-esteem.

Spanking as a means of discipline measure to correct bad behavior has also been associated with the cause of mental health symptoms later in life. According to Gershoff E, T. (15), physical punishment such as spanking has been linked with childrens’mental impairments such as anxiety, depression, drug abuse and general psychological maladjustments. He also said that, one means by which it causes mental impairments in children is by increasing the stress levels. Despite causing mental impairments, it causes a bad parent to child relationship. Children trust their parents as they see parents as the only means of their protection, so when a parent spank a child, that child cannot trust him or her any more.Besides, the child comes to fear their punishers whether parents or even their teachers. This makes learning difficult because a child can’t learn when he or she is afraid.Dr.Bruce has shown that it is biologically impossible to learn when you are in a fearful environment. He explains that, when a child is in fearful situation, the brain cannot process the message, “10 Reasons Spanking Your Kids is a Bad Idea”.

It’s clear that spanking should not be used as a discipline measure to correct bad behavior. This is because despite stopping the bad behavior immediately it has been shown to cause more negative effects. Corporal punishments elicit the negative feelings that were not intended such as anger, distress fear and shame. People should replace corporal punishments with better alternatives such as promoting words instead of actions. Don’t be fast to hit instead give a listening ear. They should also learn to use positive reinforcements such as praise or rewards as they have been shown to cause long term behavior compliance. Lastly parents should set a good example to their children and they will emulate the good behaviors. In short, people should find better alternatives of correcting bad behavior instead of using corporal punishments.

DAY THREE

Acting

Objectives;

To nature the children’s talent

To provide an avenue where the child can express himself/ herself

Pupil’s task;

To follow the teachers guidelines

To be willing to work in a group setting.

Teacher’s task;

To show the children how to dramatise and express themselves through acting.

Provide plays which are fun and easy to act. In case of plays with a complicated plot the teacher should simplify it and rewrite it in a simpler way.

By developing a class with same activities all aimed at achieving one prime objective that is to develop a child’s talent and grouping the lessons or units in a way that all contents complement one another for example in the case above, all are involved with self expression (Lee, 2000).

Through bringing children and other people from outside to help and to motivate the children through competitions, this adds to the teaching skills and the impact of one’s teaching skills.

Children will be able to assess themselves through several internal and external competitions so as to prove if the skills and approaches are working for them or not, children will develop a repertoire of themselves through the skills and their performance in class through presentations(Lee, 2000).

My experience

I reached out the academic advisor through zoom. Upon scheduling the advising appointment through navigating, I got a confirmation email with a link to meet the advisor virtually. I went to the zoom appointment prepared with topics and questions I wanted to discuss in a way that I was ready to jot down several notes about our conversation. The appointment went so good. It was necessary for me to share information with him about myself and my academic progress. I enjoyed the zoom advising appointment. I think it was well planned and laid out, easy for me to follow. I learned about the topics whereby I didn’t feel tired or exhausted. I got more knowledge about weather, ocean, and marine lives, and hopefully, I can use them in real life. I never projected to learn so much from the zoom appointment; I now see the ocean life in an entirely new way much.

The appointment helped me monitor my academic progress, offered me a better connection with the faculty, and also gave me the ability to navigate the university policies and procedures better. I am not planning to transfer to any school. The courses that I will take for the spring semester include the art of communication, knowledge-based system, the biochemistry of biomolecules, molecular biology, world approaches to films, and law & ethics in the animation. The zoom appointment was essential in a way that it assisted me in growing and developing by constructing meaningful educational plans which were compatible with my life goals.

Introduction The issue of sexually transmitted diseases is one of the significant challenges that affect young people, especially currently among universities and colleges; young people are having difficulty coping with the challenges and issues they face as sexually transmitted infections are on the rise. The major causes of this whole issue is being sexually active and sharing partners or having more than one partner. This can be said to be one of the major practices in most teenagers and young adults, and it is difficult to deal with the issue. This is because most of the teenagers are not open about what they go through. Therefore this research paper focuses on the challenge in finding the best way to deal with young people with a focus on sexually transmitted infections and how they can be treated or the spread to be stopped.

Challenges faced during research

There have been many challenges in researching the issue of sexually transmitted diseases among young people. It is an important area to venture into and try to bring solutions to the many problems that lead to many sexually transmitted infections. It is also essential to carry out tests and campaigns about it since the young people might respond to that better than just a friend of theirs researching about the issue for academic purposes.

One of the significant challenges was the unavailability of the young people for interviews or to answer the questionnaires. This was a big challenge as trying to get someone to answer the whole of the questionnaire was not easy as young people have priorities which to a certain degree might look misinformed. Therefore this was a challenge, but I did try to get several of the young people to fill in the questionnaires and avail themselves for the interviews. This challenge might have been related to the fact that the young people do not want to discuss about the challenges they face and how these challenges have affected them therefore decide to be silent and live with what the challenges bring to them.

The other challenge faced was the young people being selective on what they wanted to talk about since they felt differently about different issues. Therefore, to some extent, mostly whereby my friends were being interviewed, I tended to make sure they were entirely comfortable about what we were doing to help them give out the expected or required information without distraction. Another challenge faced was the shyness or the feeling that it was not the right thing to talk about a person’s sexual life, especially with a focus on sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore this is what led many people into being silent about the issue and most of these young people keep on suffering in silence.

Benefits gained

The completion of this research paper helped me understand and gain knowledge of the area I concentrated on. This means, therefore, I gained experience about the importance of talking and discussing the problems a person faces, especially if they are sexual related problems and if they are affecting the individuals mentally, physically, emotionally, and how they behave.

I also learned that the effects of the sexually transmitted diseases are far more than a person could imagine, and therefore it had to be addressed since it has always been seen as the tip of the problem and not the whole picture. Encouraging people to see the entire concept of sexually transmitted diseases, especially in colleges and universities, is essential. It helps them understand how these young people can be supported to remain healthy and away from such effects and risks of their lives.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I can say that even though the preparation of the paper was tiresome, it was worth the efforts and the time invested into it because it also helped me to learn a lot about the sexual behaviours and generally the lives of many students in higher institutions of learning. Therefore it is essential to address some lifestyles to curb challenges which come along the sexually transmitted infections and diseases.

Child development

Child development is the process of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development from conception through adolescence. Development begins at the moment of fertilization and is a lifelong continuous process. The stage of development refers to what a child can do at a specific age or age group. The table below provides an overview of child development in the different domains (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive) across the developmental stages: conception until adolescence. Physical development of a child happens at periods and times that are different for all children. Physical development refers to the growth of body organs and systems, as well as the development of muscle strength, control, coordination, and endurance.

Social development is the process of acquiring skills that allow an individual to interact with others. Social development happens in a series of steps: attachment, developmental stages, and peer relations. In this stage, children are beginning to learn about the world around them and their parents play an important role in their physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development. Children learn to communicate with others and they start listening more to what people are saying (Cacciatore et al., 2019).

The emotional development of a child happens at various times and in various ways. Emotional development refers to how children respond to the environment, their relationships with others, and how they express their feelings and emotions. They begin to smile at the age of 2 to 3 months and begin to laugh around the age of 4 months. They show feelings such as fear, grief, and surprise between the ages of 2 and 6 months. They develop stranger fear between the ages of 5 and 6 months. At six months, they can imitate the expressions of others (Cacciatore et al., 2019). Cognitive development is the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and understanding that enables an individual to become more competent in a particular domain such as language, science, math, or social skills. Cognitive development can be described by different models which include biological markers, cognitive functioning tests, psychometric tests, behavior rating scales, and cognitive psychology tests.

In a globalized world with more than 200 countries and languages, the concept of “culture” is difficult to pin down. Cultural values can be influenced by religion, race, ethnicity, or geography. Cultures are also constantly evolving and adapting in response to many factors including political upheaval, war, or natural disasters. The United Nations Children’s Fund estimates that “about 130 million children live in difficult circumstances due to poverty” (Masten, 2018). When children experience negative influences such as high rates of violence or low rates of education they often suffer from impaired physical health or developmental delays. One area where almost all children experience some degree of cultural influence is language. Most children in developed nations learn at least two spoken languages by age five; by adolescence, they are typically fluent in an average of four languages.

Children from middle-class families generally have greater access to resources and opportunities than children from low-income families. In the United States, for example, more than one in five children live in poverty. According to a recent study by The Annie E. Casey Foundation, less than half of children who grow up in families earning less than $15,000 per year will graduate from high school on time. The situation is not much different in developing countries where an estimated 68 million primary school-age children are not enrolled in school. The disparity between rich and poor is also apparent when it comes to many health indicators.

The political landscape of a country may be defined by the level of economic development, armed conflict, religious and ethnic diversity, or totalitarian rule. For example, life expectancy in Iraq is currently 37 years and almost one in four people are living under military occupation. In some countries, political issues like ethnic tension have led to violence against children as well as forced child soldiers (Masten, 2018).

A classroom is a place of learning and play for children. The adults in charge need to understand the developmental tasks that children are undertaking at specific age levels. Using several frameworks, a range of children’s developmental tasks can be conceptualized. Implementing those tasks into the classroom will help children to feel more comfortable and confident. Adults have an important role in their development as well. Teachers need to know about their development stages, which starts with understanding the major theoretical frameworks such as Jean Piaget’s and Lev Vygotsky’s (Baltes, 2019).

Jean Piaget was a Swiss child psychologist who made important contributions to developmental psychology. He observed children’s behavior in the classroom environment and studied their cognitive development. In his theory, he emphasized that development takes place as a result of interaction between an active child and his or her environment (Devi, 2019). That interaction leads to cognitive advances one stage at a time. For example, if caregivers change their stimulation level, children will advance to the next level of development.

In conclusion, children have different needs and adults need to know about their developmental stages so that they can provide the needed stimulation for each stage. The children will feel more comfortable when they receive supervision. When people study the development of a child and the different factors that influence his or her development, it will be easier to understand what goal he or she should have reached on a particular day and how can one change the situation.

Child Labor

All companies must strive to enforce a zero tolerance policy for child labour. Companies buying from Chinese suppliers should be especially vigilant in enforcing this law. In the case study, Samsung declined to sever ties with Shinyang Company, which was accused of hiring underage children. The excuse that Shinyang gave was that it did not directly hire children, but its subcontractor was to blame. In this situation, Samsung showed that it was willing to overlook the violation of child labour policy under Chinese laws. Such practices show that companies are willing to overlook some cases of hiring children, and this creates a culture of permissiveness. Some countries are not very strict when it comes to enforcing child labour laws, and this may lead some people to hire children for several reasons. Children cannot fight for their rights, such as fair wage and good working conditions. They, therefore, end up being exploited and they lose their innocence. They also end up missing out on the chance to get an education so that they can decide what to do with their lives.

To protect children, companies such as Samsung should have zero tolerance towards companies that hire children. A zero tolerance policy will make companies hiring children to lose business opportunities and therefore, they will be forced to abandon the practice. Permissiveness and willingness to overlook some instances such as the case of Shinyang Company promote child, and this should be done away with altogether. Companies should also implement strict vetting procedures for the companies that they buy products from. When a supplier is found to be in violation of child labour policies, the partnership should be severed immediately, and there should be other consequences such as fines. Doing this will go a long way to ensuring that children all over the world are protected from underage employment and exploitation.
